Bottle and Technical Notes: “Winter 2019 was characterized by rains and snowfalls that allowed the deposit of water reserves; average spring temperatures favored an early April budbreak and high summer temperatures in June, July and August brought the grapes to perfect ripening. In general, the 2019 vintage has produced well balanced wines with an excellent aging potential. Fermentation on the skins at 28-30° C for 18-20 days followed by malolactic fermentation in steel. 80% of the wine then matures for 24 months in 60 or 90 hl in Slavonian oak casks, and 20% in 225-litre French barriques, followed by a further 6 months or so in the bottle.”

Tasting Notes: The color is a luscious intense ruby color. Richly aromatic and fragrant, deep ripe red berries are prominent on the nose. This full-bodied wine has balanced tannins and acidity, with a lingering rich mouthfeel.

Suggested Pairing Notes: Grilled meat, rare carved meat.

We went old school by pairing the Il Grigio Da San Felice Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2019 with roast beef accompanied by roasted carrots, creamy mashed potatoes, and a rich portobello mushroom gravy to bring out the flavors of the wine. This was a delicious pairing that worked exceptionally well. This delectable wine would also pair well with cooked tomato-based recipes and hard cheeses and is also a standout to drink on its own. While lovely to drink now, this wine will also cellar nicely to bring out all the nuances from this award-winning vineyard, that is if you can wait that long. Perhaps buy two, one for now, and one for later.

Until next time, cheers and buon appetito!

The History of Agricola San Felice

“Welcome to the ancient Pieve San Felice in Pincis. Its history dates back to Etruscan times. It endured the days of rule by the Papacy, was fought over by the communes of Florence and Siena and has been managed by a succession of local families. The last of these were the Grisaldi Del Taja family, one of the founders of the Chianti Classico Consortium in the first half of the 20th century. A new development model was launched in the 1970s, when the estate was purchased by the Allianz Group with an intention of focusing on wine-making and territorial excellence. The Borgo was fully renovated, with meticulous restoration work to enhance its architectural and artistic features, and, in 1992, it became the only Resort in the Chianti Classico area to be admitted to the international Relais & Châteaux luxury hotel circuit. At the same time, the winery began an extensive vineyard replanting programme with the aim of maximising the value of its Sangiovese grapes. This project was supported by scientific research into native grape varieties, in collaboration with the Universities of Florence and Pisa. The San Felice estates cover a total of approximately 700 hectares, 188 of which are planted with vines, in the three most prestigious production areas in Tuscany: Chianti Classico, Montalcino and Bolgheri. The important acknowledgements received over the years prompted the winery to expand its production areas. This led to the purchase, in 1981, of the Campogiovanni estate in Montalcino, where it began making Brunello, and, in 2016, of the prestigious area in Bolgheri, where the wines of the new Bell’Aja label are made. Today, the Borgo and San Felice are two successful businesses with a shared soul, which unites tradition and innovation.”
