Docks Oyster Bar
Since 1987, Docks Oyster Bar and Seafood Grill has attracted Manhattanites and visitors alike to the attractive restaurant located in the heart of Midtown on the corner of Third Avenue and 40th Street, a short stroll from Grand Central. Art Deco design accentuates the large space which has 2 walls of windows bringing ambient light into the restaurant, large seasonal arrangements placed throughout the restaurant add gracious appeal, sconces adorn the square columns, framed vintage posters and fish prints attract the eye, and large chalkboards at the back of the upper level announce market prices and specials. White linen draped tables flanked by black wood chairs with black leather seats, and waitstaff wearing white shirts and long black and white striped aprons continue the Art Deco feel of white and black design.

The long rectangular bar with bar seating on all four sides in the center of the restaurant acts as a focal point and also creates separate dining areas at tables on the main level on either side of the bar and in the back of the room, with additional seating on the upper level including tables placed along the windows offering diners a view of the room as well as views of the happenings of New York enfolding around them.
Oysters, Oysters, Oysters
We have dined at Docks Oyster Bar and Seafood Grill many times throughout the years beginning in 1998, and have always enjoyed the experience whether for lunch or for dinner. Although their Oyster Festival is now several years running, this was our first time attending. As oyster fans, their Fall 2016 Oyster Festival held on Saturday, November 19, 2016, was a highlight for us.
Shucking Oysters
We began by taking a culinary journey sampling various raw oysters from New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, Maryland, and Mexico provided by Gotham Seafood, K & B Seafood, and Blue Island Shellfish at the stations set up around the room where the oyster shuckers explained each type of oyster. From the small and ruffled edge shelled Kumamoto oysters to large southern oysters, we enjoyed sampling each of them accompanied by mignonette, horseradish, and cocktail sauces for diners who wanted more than a squeeze of fresh lemon to the tasty oysters. Although we love all types of oysters, each type has its own unique flavors. Some are delicate with a mild brininess such as the Kumamoto oyster to others which are plump, meaty, and have medium to heavy brininess.
Shrimp Anyone?
Next, we had fried oysters which were extremely tender and almost melted in our mouths, and fritters made with oysters, also very nice. Continuing with fried selections, the waiter brought us Po Boys, which were deep fried oysters on a bed of coleslaw presented in small brioche rolls. Also nice were the Oysters Rockefeller, which of course we indulged.
Oyster and Clam Chowder
We also sampled a cup of the Creole Oyster Chowder which was deliciously rich and thick and accompanied by individual bags of Westminster Bakers Company oyster crackers. Corn bread and a large basket of different breads were also offered to pair with the Creole Oyster Chowder and the New England Clam Chowder. A mountain of colossal size shrimp on a bed of crushed ice drew our attention like a mermaid’s siren song to sailors, and we indulged in sampling them as well.

Music by DJ Hanzi kept the groove going, and bartenders kept cocktails flowing with Bloody Mary’s, Dirty Martinis with Svedka Vodka, lemon juice, Tabasco juice, and freshly shucked oysters, a diverse selection of beers including Sam Adams, Angry Orchard Cider, Delerium Tremens Belgian Ale, and wines provided by Palm Bay Wines.

From beginning to end, it was a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon in New York City at Docks Oyster Bar and Seafood Grill for their Fall 2016 Oyster Festival.
