Thousand Pines
We saw the play, Thousand Pines on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Westport County Playhouse, and we must admit that when we first heard about the play, we were dragging our feet a bit about whether or not we wanted to see this intense and dramatic play about the story of three families whose lives have been impacted and shattered by a shooting at their children’s school, Thousand Pines. However, we did indeed go to see the play and once it started, this exceptionally told and acted story totally captivated us with its realism and its humanity. It is a story that goes beyond the tragedy of the school shooting by looking at the after-effects of how those families try to cope with their loss, how they try to make sense of a senseless act of violence, how some try to come to some form of acceptance, and ultimately, for a few, how they come to find a quiet peace in their hearts.

Thousans Pines
Insightfully and powerfully written by the acclaimed playwright Matthew Greene and brilliantly directed by Austin Pendleton, the extremely talented cast of six (Katie Aillon, Anne Bates, Joby Earle, Kelly McAndrew, William Ragsdale, and Andrew Veenstra) play three different families.

Thousand Pines
Against a beautifully crafted set by Walt Spangler, the play looks at the effect on each member of the families, as well as the impact on the community members, whose lives will forever be interwoven after a needless and violent tragedy that should never have happened. In an unfortunate time where school shootings continue to happen, this incredibly relevant play made a powerful impact on the audience resulting in a standing ovation. Thousand Pines is a play that left us emotionally wrought and is a play that should definitely be seen.

The Westport Country Playhouse named as "Theatre Company of the Year" in December 2013 by The Wall Street Journal, opened in the 1930s in a transformed 1835 cow barn, which has, and continues to attract, a "who’s who" of prominent actors. Looking at the framed posters of past shows that line the lobby walls was like entering an encyclopedia of the arts. A few of the many renowned actors who have appeared on the stage there include Ethyl Barrymore, Dorothy and Lillian Gish, Tallulah Bankhead, Gloria Swanson, Don Ameche, Hume Croninand Jessica Tandy, Jane Fonda, Danny Aiello, Blythe Danner, Jill Clayburgh, Richard Dreyfus, Whoopi Goldberg, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Lynn Redgrave, Gene Wilder, and Westport residents Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman.
"Westport Country Playhouse, a not-for-profit theater, serves as acultural nexus for patrons, artists and students and is a treasured resource for the State of Connecticut. There are no boundaries to the creative thinking for future seasons or the kinds of audiences and excitement for theater that Westport Country Playhouse can build."
