We saw the play on August 26, 2014, and if you enjoy British comedy, you are going to love the 1997 Alan Ayckbourn play, Things We Do For Love. The plot and dialogue is pure delight and revolves around four characters: Barbara, a fussy perfectionist, executive assistant married to her job played by Geneva Carr; Hamish the hunky Scot played by Matthew Greer engaged to Barbara’s friend, Nikki who is slightly daft but adorable played by Sarah Manton, and the resident oddball handyman Gilbert played by Michael Mastro.

Old school chums Barbara and Nikki are reunited when Nikki and Hamish decide to rent a flat in Barbara’s London house while their own house is being renovated, and thus the plot wickedly thickens. Throw Gilbert into the mix, postman by day and long winded handyman by night who lives in the basement, and you have all the delicious ingredients for an evening of laughter.

The play takes place in Barbara’s house and the set design by James Noone is brilliant with its view into her living room, the working staircase to the second floor and the glimpse into the couple’s flat, and a small look into Gilbert’s basement abode.

"I’m so happy to present the work of two men who have given countless evenings of joy and laughter to our audiences over the years: playwright Alan Ayckbourn and director John Tillinger," said Mark Lamos, Playhouse artistic director. "John has a special gift for releasing the bubbles of inanity, comic helplessness, pain and humanity in the champagne bottles that are Ayckbourn’s brilliantly funny comedies. And ‘Things We Do for Love’ is one of his richest and most surprising."

The Westport Country Playhouse named as "Theatre Company of the Year" in December 2013 by The Wall Street Journal, opened in the 1930s in a transformed 1835 cow barn, which has, and continues to attract, a "who’s who" of prominent actors. Looking at the framed posters of past shows that line the lobby walls was like entering an encyclopedia of the arts. A few of the many renowned actors who have appeared on the stage there include Ethyl Barrymore, Dorothy and Lillian Gish, Tallulah Bankhead, Gloria Swanson, Don Ameche, Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy, Jane Fonda, Danny Aiello, Blythe Danner, Jill Clayburgh, Richard Dreyfus, Whoopi Goldberg, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Lynn Redgrave, Gene Wilder, and Westport residents Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman.
"Westport Country Playhouse, a not-for-profit theater, serves as a cultural nexus for patrons, artists and students and is a treasured resource for the State of Connecticut. There are no boundaries to the creative thinking for future seasons or the kinds of audiences and excitement for theater that Westport Country Playhouse can build."
