Pilobolus – "Come To Your Senses"
On Saturday, September 22, 2018, we had the pleasure of experiencing Pilobolus’ "Come To Your Senses" an evening of mixed repertory program, part of a 2-night engagement at the Quick Center for the Arts. The program consisted of new and older works that dazzled the eyes with the ability of the dancers as well as the engaging, illuminating, and phenomenal choreography.
The program opened with Eye Opening, a new work for 2018, which was whimsical and engaging and set the tone that this was to be an evening of fun. Selecting a member of the audience to participate in this piece further delighted and enchanted in their daring and captivating performance.
The second dance in the program was, Gnomen, a dance from 1997, which had us on the edge of our seats watching the sheer physicality and timing of the intricate choreography of the quartet of dancers, Nathaniel Buchsbaum, Zachary Eisenstat, Quincy Ellis, and Jacob Michael Warren. Four dancers became one as they intertwined their way throughout this complex genius of choreography.
The third dance was a pas de deux, entitled Symbiosis, from 2001, choreographed by Michael Tracy in collaboration with Otis Cook and Renée Jaworkski. Performed by Isabella Diaz and Jacob Michael Warren with a selection of interesting music, the pair had such style and grace, and continued the Pilobolus’ ability to astound, at one point had a prone Isabella Diaz perfectly balanced and carried on top of Jacob Michael Warren’s head. Unbelievable!
After a needed intermission, for the dancers as much as for the audience to resume normal levels of breathing, the company returned to perform, Warp & Weft, a new work for 2018, the company’s first all-woman dance, performed by Krystal Butler, Heather Favretto, and Isabella Diaz as a trio of shape-shifters, with cool music created by Indie-Rocker Thao Nguyen.
The finale of the program was Branches, a work from 2017, performed by Nathaniel Buchsbaum, Krystal Butler, Isabella Diaz, Zachary Eisenstat, Heather Favretto, and Jacob Michael Warren.
We left the theatre with the sound of the applause still resounding in our ears from the audience’s standing ovation for Pilobolus who had delivered an extremely memorable evening of contemporary dance. Every now and then a dance company comes along and blows the roof off the house, Pilobolus is one such company. Touring throughout the United States as well as internationally, Pilobolus should be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

About Pilobolus
"For over 40 years, audiences around the world have celebrated acclaimed dance company, Pilobolus. Much like the fungus it was named after, Pilobolus has the remarkable ability of orienting itself to point directly towards a light source, and that’s where the Quick comes in. Fueling its creative process and a synergy for new experiences in our community, the Quick will serve as a home for Pilobolus."
"Pilobolus began at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in1971. Moses Pendleton, an English literature major and cross-country skier; Jonathan Wolken, a philosophy science major and fencer; and Steve Johnson, a pre-med student and pole vaulter were enrolled in a dance composition class taught by Alison Becker Chase. In that class, they created their first dance, which they titled "Pilobolus" – and a legacy of movement and magic was born. Pilobolus crystallinus is a phototropic (light loving) fungus. Commonly known as "Hat Thrower," its spores accelerate 0-45 mph in the first millimeter of their flight and adhere to wherever they land. The father of Jonathan Wolken was studying pilobolus in his biology lab when the group first formed. The name was apt, and stuck. The group then went on to create dozens of dance works with its founding members Robby Barnett, Alison Chase, Martha Clarke, Lee Harris, Moses Pendelton, Michael Tracy, and Jonathan Wolken. In the more than four decades since, Pilobolus has performed on Broadway, at the Oscars, and the Olympic games, and has appeared on television, in movies, in advertisements, and in schools and businesses and created over 120 dance works. The company continues to propel the seeds of expression via human movement to every corner of the world, growing and changing each year while reaching new audiences and exploring new visual and musical planes."

Conveniently located in Fairfield, Connecticut, the Quick Center for the Arts is a 30-minute drive from Greenwich and New Haven, a 60-minute drive from Hartford, and a 90-minute drive from New York City.
