For all women who have ever experienced big city department store special event sales, (bridal, winter coats, lingerie, etc.), or have seen them on the news or on TV sitcoms, you know that when there is a special sale, women will flock to the store in droves waiting in long lines to rush inside the moment the store opens the door to get the best deals. That is the premise for the play, Menopause: The Musical, now in its 20th year. Set in the renowned department store, Bloomingdale’s in New York City, four women enter the store as strangers in search of the perfect bra during the special lingerie sale. The ensuing tug-of-war that results over who spotted the perfect black lace bra first, and the camaraderie the women find over their shared "menopause moments" as they move from department to department, is outright hilarious. While they entered the store as strangers ready to do battle over a bra, they end up leaving the store as friends.
We attended opening night of GFour Productions Presents Menopause: The Musical at The Westchester Theatre at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center on Friday, June 17, 2022, for a limited engagement performance. The play is well cast with Joy Lynn Jacobs (as a Professional Woman), Adrianne Hick (as a Soap Star), Amy Jo Phillips (as an Earth Mother), and Terry Palasz (an Iowa Housewife visiting the big city for the first time), as they belt parodies of songs from the 1930s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s lamenting and complaining about their menopause moments to each other.
When Joy Lynn Jacobs belted out Change, Change, Change, a parody of the hit 1967 song, Chain of Fools, we knew we were in for fun evening of musical theatre. The 1933 song Heat Wave took on a new meaning as Adrianne Hick sung about her own heat wave referred to as her "personal summer." Amy Jo Phillips was the perfect Earth Mother as she sung the 1963 song, Wishing and Hopin,‘ and Comedienne Terry Palasz’s sketch of trying on skimpy lingerie that was several sizes too small was worth the price of the ticket alone, with her perfect timing, comedic body movements, and hilarious facial expressions.
If you need a few laughs in your life and are experiencing, have experienced, or are still waiting to experience "the change" do go to see Menopause: The Musical at The Westchester Theatre before it leaves on June 25, 2002. Gather a few friends together and go and share "the experience" and the laughter.
Until next time, keep enjoying and supporting the arts!
