The first time that we saw Eliane Elias in concert was at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, in the Rose Theatre (1,233 seats) in November 2017, and she was fabulous. The performance at The Iridium (180-seats) on October 14, 2022, was a much more intimate gathering, providing the audience with a more personal experience as Eliane Elias conversed with and engaged the audience as she told the backstory to many of the songs.
Although it was a launch party for Quietude, released as a CD and in vinyl format for the first time since the 1990s, Eliane Elias opened the concert by playing some of her favorite songs before segueing into songs from the new album. She began with a sumptuous instrumental piece from the musical, Man of La Mancha.
Next on the playlist was the song, Aquarela do Brasil (Watercolor of Brazil), off her Made in Brazil album, which won Eliane her first Grammy in 2016. Sung in Portuguese, with vibrant rhythms and gorgeous lyrics, this song was a standout. She followed that with another cut off the same album, with the song, Você (You), where Eliane’s fingers danced over the keys with crystalline notes and stunning vocals.
Songs often have an interesting backstory, and Eliane introduced the song, Isto Aqui O Que É, written by Ary Barroso in 1942, as a song he wrote so that he could earn money to get married. It is a great song with a lasting legacy.
Moving into music from her latest release, Quietude, Eliane described it by saying that it went back to the bossa nova days when people would get together in their apartments in Rio de Janeiro where friends would sing, someone would play a guitar, some would play wooden matchbox cases or spoons against glasses. Having lived in Rio de Janeiro and spending lots of time in Brazil throughout the years, when we closed our eyes, we could remember those happy times with friends, where we often played the matchbox cases or glasses, creating music together, which is the power of music.

Segueing into Você e Eu (You and I), she captured the audience’s attention and held it in the palm of her hand and kept it there; utterly enthralled and captivated. Next, was Eu Samba Mesma (I Really Samba), followed by a wonderful Roberto Carlos song, Olha (Look), with Eliane’s luscious vocals complemented by guitar.
Eliane kept the party going with Bolinha de Papel (Little Paper Ball) a lively, up-tempo song that cooked with fun, great lyrics, and rhythm.
She closed the night with Chiclete com Banana (Gum with Banana) written by Gorduriha and Almira Castilho in 1959, a "samba rock" song that had a rocking drum solo. It was an evening of great music that spanned time, in an intimate setting perfect for getting to know more about and appreciate Eliane Elias and her stunning talent.
Until next time, keep enjoying the music!
