Fairfield Theatre Company’s StageOne audience had the pleasure of an all Devon Allman and his band evening, by that we mean that there was no opening act for their performance on July 9, 2015, which was exactly what the fans wanted. Ever the consummate showman, Devon made his entrance from the back of the theatre to the stage playing his guitar while mingling with the audience and from that intimate introduction, the die was cast, the audience pumped, and the evening was off to a rocking start with the opening song, Half the Truth off his latest release, Ragged & Dirty (read the review in the Music Scene section.)
Devon Allman
This was our third time seeing Devon Allman perform at Fairfield Theatre Company’s StageOne; the first time was March 2013 when he was touring with his band promoting his solo release Turquoise, the second time was August 2013 when he was touring with his Royal Southern Brotherhood band comprised of Devon Allman, Cyril Neville, Mike Zito, Yonrico Scott, and Charlie Wooten, and the third time was July 9, 2015. One thing was abundantly clear at each performance, Devon loves his audiences and his audiences love him right back.
Devon Allman Band
Talented Blues Rock guitarist, singer, songwriter, Devon Allman fueled the audience with his dynamic performance that was easily matched by his band’s energy, especially the amazing guitar artistry of Bobby Schneck, Jr., along with Anthony Nanney on drums, Steve Rice on bass, and newcomer Brendan Moore on keyboards.
Bobby Schneck, Jr.
Throughout the evening, Devon and the band took the audience on an anthology tour playing the cuts Mahalo, No Woman No Cry, and the title track Torch off Devon’s Honeytribe band’s 2006/2007 Torch release, intermixed with Left My Heart in Memphis off his 2012 release with the band, Royal Southern Brotherhood, which earned a nomination for a 2012 Blues Music Award, as well cuts from his solo releases Turquoise and Ragged & Dirty.
Anthony Nanney
The musical line-up included Can’t Lose ‘Em All, Leave The City, and I’ll Be Around off his 2014 Ragged & Dirty release, Homesick and Turn Off The World from his 2013 Turquoise release, and Forever Man, and Dangerous rounded out the slate.
Steve Rice
When the band returned from a brief intermission, Devon slowed the pace a bit and introduced the song Melissa stating that it was "written by a friend of mine" (aka his dad, Gregg Allman), before launching into the iconic song and had the audience singing along with him. Vintage Rock and Roll continued with the 1971 Led Zeppelin song, Stairway To Heaven, which had the audience on their feet. It was an exciting night of pure musical enjoyment, which is something that we have come to expect from each Devon Allman performance; he is a consummate musician "who delivers the goods" each and every time, and for that we are always appreciative.
