Circa – Humans 2.0
After a 2-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had the pleasure of returning to "The Quick" and it felt fabulous to be back in their beautiful theatre. The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, affectionately known as the "Quick Center," "The Quick," or "The Q," is located at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut and is a theatre-insiders dream of a venue. Their website states that their "programming aims to serve the intellectually hungry and perpetually curious…" and since we "discovered" this amazing performing arts center back in 2010, they have fed our cultural souls, curious minds, and stimulated our intellect with their inspired programs. Their offerings include a variety of lectures, dance programs, artist talks, concerts, opera performances, poetry readings, and so much more to appeal to diverse interests. While there are in-person events, they also have many virtual events to expand their audience base.

On Thursday, February 17, 2022, we went to The Quick to see the Brisbane, Australia based CIRCA Contemporary Circus "one of the world’s leading performance companies" who have dazzled audiences around the world performing in 40 countries since 2004.

As the Fairfield University Art Museum is located inside The Quick, and they always have wonderful exhibitions in their Walsh Gallery, we arrived at the theatre early to allow us enough time for a pre-performance gallery visit. There were two interesting exhibitions, "Seeing Is Believing – Crossings and Transpositions Part II" and "ink/stone," both of which we immensely enjoyed. Both exhibitions are on display until March 5, 2022.
CIRCA, consisting of an international ensemble of talented performers, presented Humans 2.0, and performed for 70-minutes without an intermission. Their performance mesmerized the full-house audience by deftly defying physical boundaries of vertical and horizontal space as well as gravity. Their years of experience and dedication to their craft was readily apparent as they seemed to effortlessly climb higher and higher upon one another, or when by flying through the air. Their performance went well beyond spectacular with the blurring of genres of athletics, acrobatics, gymnastics, aerial work, and contemporary dance movements. In a word, it was a sensational performance that kept ours, and the rest of the audience’s eyes, riveted to the stage.

The sheer physicality of CIRCA’s performance with an emphasis on the fluid beauty of maintaining body lines and their amazing agility kept us on the edge of our seats watching in wonder as they moved from one gravity defying movement to the next. Set against a black background with minimal stage lighting, the audience was drawn to watching the performers like moths drawn to a flame. Their daring performance engaged the audience and culminated in the audience exploding in appreciative applause and giving the performers a well-deserved standing ovation. It was indeed a performance that stimulated the imagination and for that we are most grateful. Bravo!
