For years, we have written about Mike Zito, and more recently have written about Albert Castiglia, and were impressed with their musicianship and storytelling Blues Rock artisanship. When they teamed up on the Mike Zito – Albert Castiglia – Blood Brothers album we were blown away by the dynamic guitar duo. Little surprise then that the Blood Brothers album released on Mike Zito’s Gulf Coast Records debuted as #1 on Billboard Top US Blues Album. When we saw them perform together at Fairfield Theatre Company’s StageOne, one of their Blood Brothers tour stops, they electrified the audience!

On Friday, April 7, 2023, we caught their performance at Fairfield Theatre Company’s StageOne in Fairfield, Connecticut, one of the many stops along the way on their Blood Brothers Tour. After the Fairfield concert, the tour travels throughout the United States then heads to Europe to the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, before heading back home to the United States.

The band consisted of Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia on guitars, Doug Byrkit on bass, and double drumming were Ephraim Lowell and Matt Johnson. Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia opened the concert with the first cut off the new Blood Brothers album, a rollicking song called, Hey Sweet Mama, and the evening was off to a blistering start with some well-matched guitar rhythms and great harmonies.

They followed that up with two more cuts from the new album, Tooth And Nail, and In My Soul, then Albert had fun as he led into his Let The Big Dog Eat – off his Big Dog album released in 2016, complete with him barking at the end. Trading lead guitar and vocals, they segued into another cut off the new album with Fool Never Learns.

Next on the setlist was a heartbreaking ballad off the new album entitled, A Thousand Heartaches, with Albert breaking hearts with his soul wrenching lyrics and vocals, followed by No Good Woman, and My Business.

Taking a step back in time, Mike slid into the 1955 Chuck Berry song, 30 Days, off Mike’s 16th album, A Tribute to Chuck Berry. The band followed that up with another Blood Brothers song, Hill Country Jam, then Albert slid into the song, What the Hell Was I Thinking, off his 2016 Big Dog album.

The band slowed the pace with You’re Gonna Burn, followed by Mike Zito’s Highway Mama off his 2016 album, Make Blues Not War. The band gave the audience one more taste of the new album with the song, Bag Me. Tag Me, Take Me Away. They closed out the night with Gone To Texas – off Mike Zito & The Wheel – Gone To Texas 2013 album, followed by Rockin.

It was an evening celebrating the new music off the Blood Brothers album, with a nod to the past offering longtime fans a bit of nostalgia. It was a night to remember with the Blood Brothers’ rousing Blues Rock music that raised the roof off StageOne in Connecticut! Bravo!
