The last time we saw the Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández perform was ten years ago at The Quick Center for the Arts and we were enthralled with their performance. We were delighted to return to "The Quick" on Saturday, February 26, 2022, to see them perform again. Once again, the large company of twenty-nine dancers and fifteen musicians filled the stage with their breathtaking program divided into 9 dances that told a story. The high caliber of the dance company, as well as the beautiful and colorful costumes, and the rich history of the Mariachi music, captivated the audience of all ages.
The exquisite program began with Aztecas (hijos del sol), translated as Aztecs, sons of the sun, based on Aztec ritual dances, which consisted of four dances. It continued with Sones Antiguos de Michoacán (folk songs and dances of the Michoacán), considered to be the most important choreography of Amalia Hernández as she combined modern with classical dance techniques, imprinting, and changing the course of Mexican dance.
Next in the program was the dance Tarima de Tixtia, based on the original dances of Guerrero, a state located in southwestern Mexico. Bright, colorful costumes and joyful exuberance by dancing feet made this ballet one of the standouts of the program. The ballet La Revolución is dedicated to the women "Soldaderas" or "Adelitas" who fought in the Mexican Revolution. This ballet was marked by precision dancing and costumes that told the story of their struggles and survival.
La Charreada is a deep-rooted tradition in Mexico which encompasses equestrian and livestock activities in the different communities of the country and is declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Charreia is an art and discipline in which both men and women compete according to strict rules, wearing colorful Mexican costumes trimmed in silver studs. For this ballet, a "charro" kept his lariat continually in motion while the company performed this exciting and engaging work.
Fiesta en Tlacotalpan was another spectacular part of the program with the dancers wearing gorgeous white Veracruz costumes and percussive footwork that showcased the influence of Spanish culture on Jarocha dance and music with Flamenco-like choreography.
La vida es un juego, is a ballet whose central characters are a devil, death, cupid, and the love story between a bride, her groom, and her lover. Danza del Venado (dance of the red deer), is a representation of the state of Sonora, located in the Northwest of Mexico, and is considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The Deer Dance is a ritual performed before hunting expeditions. The last ballet of the program was the Fiesta en Jalisco (Party in Jalisco). Jalisco is a state located in Western Mexico, and this ballet captured the region and its folklore through the dances, music, and colorful costumes.
Once again, the Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández surpassed our expectations with its dedication to the art of tradition, culture, dance, and music. It is a dance company that must be seen to fully appreciate the talent of the choreography, dancers, and musicians. Their 2022 tour will take them around the United States, so if you have the opportunity to experience the Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández we highly recommend that you go to see them. Bravo!
