A Sherlock Carol - New World Stage

Ever since Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol in 1843, it has been a beloved part of the holiday tradition for many people. Throughout the years, it has been republished as a book, made into films, and into plays. For his play, A Sherlock Carol, Author and Director Mark Shanahan, brings together two memorable characters to life: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes (published in 1892), and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol’s Ebenezer Scrooge, for a delightful and memorable mishmash of a play that totally works. We saw A Sherlock Carol at the New World Stages in New York City and were happy that we made this play one of our new holiday traditions. A Sherlock Carol runs until January 1, 2023, so hurry before it leaves for the season.

We saw the play on Saturday, December 10, 2022, and were impressed with the merging of the two story lines, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The multi-credentialed talented cast is comprised of Drew McVety as Sherlock Holmes, Allen Gilmore as Ebenezer Scrooge, Joanna Carpenter as Emma Wiggins, Dan Domingues as Tiny Tim Cratchit all grown up, Isabel Keating as The Countess, and Mark Price as Dr Watson, who clearly bring joy to each of their roles.

Linda Cho‘s gorgeous costumes and stunning scenic design by Anna Louizos help transport the audience from modern day Manhattan to back in time to 1854 to Christmastime in London, where Sherlock Holmes, the world’s greatest detective who can solve any crime with his astute powers of observation and remarkable memory to recall even the most minute of details, is tasked with finding whom or what killed his friend Ebenezer Scrooge.

While Ebenezer Scrooge firmly believed in ghosts, Sherlock Holmes is a man of science who defies the belief in the supernatural. His theory is put to the test though when he has visions of the past haunting his present that impede his ability to resolve this conflict. With so many people relying on his innate abilities, can he resolve this conflict of acknowledging the theory of ghosts versus scientific reality in time to solve the case? Without giving away the ending, do believe in Sherlock, because after all, he is the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.
