Davell Crawford – Piano In The Vaults, Vol. 1 was "Conceptualized, Written, Arranged, Produced, and Purr-Formed by Davell CrawfordTM for Soulspel Music," recorded between 1998 – 2013, produced by executive producers Davell Crawford and Mark Samuels, and released on the Basin Street Records label.
Davell Crawford opens the 13-track release with New Orleans Honky-Tonk at its best with his song, Song For James, then segues into Booker Days, a tribute to Booker T. What Is A Home Without A Mother features some fine piano "cakewalking" along the ivories. He continues with the wonderful instrumental Morning Star, written by Dave Bartholomew and James "Sugarboy" Crawford (1934 – 2012) who was Davell’s grandfather.
Fine Brown Frame (featuring Carol Frani), written by Guadalupe Cartiero and J. Mayo Williams is a delightful romp full of innuendo and banter between Davell and Carol Frani. Davell slows the pace with the traditional song, Make Me A Pallet On The Floor.
Buddy Bolden’s Blues is an old-timey blues piece about Buddy Bolden (1877 – 1931) written by Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton (1885-1941) and recorded in 1939 in the best of New Orleans Ragtime Jazz style.
Next in the line-up is the Jimmy Cox song, Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out, which Davell makes his own, then continues with 2 more of his own songs, Baby Please Be True and Teana Titty. Baby Please Be True picks up the pace, then slides into the instrumental Teana Titty, which has some great piano styling.
The release continues with the fabulous 1954-hit Walkin’ By Myself written by J.A. Lane AKA Jimmy Rogers (1924 – 1997), who had played with Muddy Waters and Little Walter. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Bartholomew (born in 1918) and James "Sugarboy" Crawford lend one more of their songs, You Gave Me Love, before the release closes with the Percy Mayfield song, Please Send Me Someone To Love, that like a wonderful New Orleans meal is totally satisfying. Laissez les bon temps roulez!
Keep enjoying the music!
