I first met
Jacques Pépin in April
2005 at the James Beard House in New York when I
interviewed him on receiving their Lifetime Achievement Award. Throughout the
years, I have watched this kind and talented Master of the Kitchen and
Master Artist charm and delight students, audiences, and readers of his
many books. He has taught us not only how to cook, but how to have fun and take
delight in the kitchen as well as in ourselves. His latest book, Jacques Pépin: Art of the
Chicken - A Master Chef's Paintings, Stories, and Recipes of the Humble Bird is filled with
wonderful stories and his impressive artwork and makes a wonderful gift for
yourself or your favorite chef.
When I met
Jacques Pépin in 2005, I learned that this French-born chef's artistry went
well beyond the kitchen. When he came to the United States he went to Columbia
University and took courses in painting and sculpture. That training helped him
when it came to remodeling his house, where he did the marble and granite work
himself, and he even went so far as to do the cement work and paint his tiles.
I met
Jacques again in October 2022 at the Greenwich Wine + Food Gala 2022 at Abigail Kirsch at The Loading
Dock, in Stamford, Connecticut. Throughout the evening, Jacques mingled with the guests and the
participating chefs, with his new cookbook and stunning artwork on display.
As I read
his latest cookbook, Jacques Pépin: Art of the Chicken, I learned
that his culinary training began at home with his mother in Bourg-en-Bresse,
France, then from the age of 13 his training continued by working in
restaurants in France then later in the United States. Throughout his long
career he has worked at some of the most impressive restaurants in Paris and in
New York, has appeared on numerous television programs including the Julia
(Child) & Jacques Cooking at Home series, is an author of many
cookbooks, is a lecturer and an educator, and is the founder of The
Jacques Pépin Foundation established in
2016. He is a remarkable person and a true inspiration for all.

Jacques
Pépin: Art of the Chicken published
by HARVEST, copyright 2022, is a look into his history as he reflects on his
early life in France to present day living in Connecticut. Born in 1935,
cooking, art, and the chicken have all played a vital role in his life. His
stories are delightful, and the recipes in the book are written as if Jacques
is in the kitchen sitting with you, sipping a glass of champagne, and
instructing you how to make the chicken centric recipes. Jacques' artwork of
his chickens is bold, colorful, whimsical, and a delight to the eye, much like
the artist behind the work.
