The London Outpost of Bovey Castle, part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, www.slh.com,collection, is a charming former 1880’s private residence, which has the personal feeling of returning home, as this lovely gem boasts just 11 stunning guestrooms. Situated in Cadogan Gardens, it is in a quiet neighborhood, located directly across the street from the Cadogan Gardens, where guests can enter with a key from the hotel and enjoy a stroll through the park or relax on one of the benches. It is also only a short stroll away from the famous Sloane Street shopping. The hotel has 4 floors, with 2 or 3 guestrooms per floor; each individually furnished with period English antiques, paintings and each room is named after famous artists or writers that lived in the neighborhood. After being warmly welcomed back to the hotel in November 2004 by Amanda Yew and long-term butler, Yoseff Idrissi, Edward F. Nesta and I were shown to the Jane Austen room, which was perfect for this writer. Our room had a lovely fireplace, cozy loveseat and views of Cadogan Gardens, a coffee table, and on the desk there was a picture of Jane Austen and a little history of the author. Our bathroom had lovely full-size Crabtree & Evelyn Aloe Vera amenities, as well as fluffy robes and slippers.
In the evening, we relaxed with complimentary champagne served in elegant silver goblets and enjoyed snacks by the fireplace in the hotel’s intimate drawing room. This comfortable room, was a wonderful place to read, write a postcard at the antique desk, and to look at the carefully composed directory of restaurants and plays, with detailed descriptions of both, to assist us in choosing our evening’s outings.
In the lower level of the hotel there is a snooker table for guests use, as well as another larger sitting area with inviting fireplace, and a ceiling with a hand-painted sky motif. Guests can read the newspaper, watch television, or enjoy a drink from the drinks cabinet. Breakfast is served in the Conservatory, located just off the sitting area. It is a light-filled room with four round tables draped with plaid linens, where guests can enjoy their breakfast on Spode Marlborough Sprays china, and there were bouquets of pink roses were on each table. Beyond the Conservatory windows, there was a view of the garden wall with hand-painted greenery, and ornamented with boxwood, orange geraniums and other pretty plants. Although we had light breakfasts each morning, Chef Laura Sgrdescu came out of the kitchen to see if she could change our minds and to let us know she was ready to make us full English breakfasts. With such care, it is no wonder why their guests keep returning to The London Outpost of Bovey Castle. Former guests of The London Outpost as well as Luxury Experience magazine readers who read our article in 2003 on the Best of London (in Destinations) will notice that the hotel has a new name. That is because they now have a new sister hotel, Bovey Castle on Dartmoor National Park, www.boveycastle.com, in Devon, England, which opened up in April of 2004.
