While some consider the first sign that Spring is on its way is when crocuses break through the soil and stretch their flowers skywards, for others it is the sighting of the first robin, and for Luxury Experience, it is when the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) puts on its annual orchid show. For 2025, the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory takes its visitors on a trip to Mexico for The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism inspired by Mexican Modernist architect Luis Barragán. We went on the opening day and the show was exquisite. Why wait for Spring to arrive (March 20) when you can visit the NYBG and get a head start. The Orchid Show at the NYBG runs until April 27, 2025.

By the time that February comes around, we start longing for Spring and find the need to escape winter’s doldrums if even for a few hours. We have found the New York Botanical Garden’s annual orchid show to be a perfect remedy. We attended the 2025 show on opening day on Saturday, February 15, 2025, when the weather was cold, the sky was gray, and snow lingered on the ground and in the air.

Entering the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, we felt as if we had traveled to Mexico via the NYBG’s theme, Mexican Modernism inspired by Mexican Modernist architect Luis Barragán (1902-1988) who was born in Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico. Brightly colored walls functioned as stylish and simplistic accents for nature’s gorgeously exotic orchids that come in all shapes, sizes, and hues from hot fuchsia pink to royal purple, goldenrod yellow, lavender, pale pink, crimson, orange, brown, white, and even green.

As we wandered through the conservatory from gallery to gallery, we left the world of the Bronx, New York behind as we absorbed the colors, the stunning beauty of the orchids and the lush greenery, the exotic fragrance of the orchids and other plants, and the music, that took our senses on a delightful and exotic journey.

There were several signs throughout the conservatory offering insight into the Luis Barragán’s inspired designs, and also his vision. He “envisioned gardens as magical places that captured the soul of the home. He believed gardens should be spaces of peace and contemplation – necessary for the well-being of busy urban dwellers. The garden was not a separate area behind the walls of the house, but an extension of the home.”

The Lover’s Fountain in the Palm Dome was a stunning highlight and focus of the show with its white and bright orange walls covered with orchids in various shades of orange and peach and a water feature that cascaded into the pool of water where pots of orchids were arranged with palms, with the lush background of towering palms in the background.

The artful use of colorful panes of glass added pops of color to the glass roof, a jacaranda tree painted electric blue held a plethora of orchids in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and hot fuchsia pink, royal purple, goldenrod yellow, and bright orange walls provided perfect backgrounds for nature’s gorgeous exotic orchids.

Like many orchid lovers, we make The Orchid Show at the NYBG a part of our annual Spring celebration and have attended the show since 2016. Each year the show has a different theme and design that highlights the exquisite orchid and captivates visitors’ senses and imaginations.

While orchids look delicate, they are easy to grow indoors. We always have several orchids at our home in various stages of bloom, and we always enjoy attending The Orchid Show not only for its beauty and artistry, but also for added information that we learn about these stunning and exotic flowers each year.
