Long Tall Deb & Colin John – Light It Up was Produced by Chris Butler, Colin John, and Long Tall Deb and released on the Vizztone Label Group. The release contains 8 original tracks and a couple of stellar covers. This Soul-Blues duo is known for infusing their global music journey and crossing genres in their releases, and with Light It Up, they left no music stone unturned.
The release opens with the title track, Light It Up, a smoldering Blues song to set the listening table. Featuring Long Tall Deb’s great vocals and powerful lyrics, this is a great table setter as she sings, “Let’s take hunger, let’s take fear…..light a spark…a new kind of fire,…and we will light it up right now.” The release follows with the track, My Love, featuring a catchy baseline that deepens the lyrics, “Love is patient, love is kind,….my love is more than enough.”
Changing the tempo to a slow and powerful track, Lessons In The Ground, which is driven by the haunting vocals of Long Tall Deb and guitar work of Colin John. The lyrics “Shadows on a tree, lessons in the ground…turn this world around,” are powerful and emphasized by Long Tall Deb’s phrasing and vocal prowess.
Picking up the pace they cover the track, Sweet Dreams (Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart), and they add great Texas Blues vocal tempo and guitar work to sweeten the cover. A solid baseline accompanied by soft guitar work and solid vocals cast the presence for the track, Hear Them Moan. I enjoyed hitting the replay button for the tracks Sweet Dreams and Hear Them Moan as they encompasses down and dirty Blues with captivating guitar work.
The cover of the track, Spoonful (Dixon), is laced with Long Tall Deb’s characteristic vocal style that lends to a refreshing version of this classic song. They lean into the Blues with the next two tracks, Deflection Blues, and Black Light Wolf and the release closes with the tracks, Out For a Rip, an instrumental song featuring ripping guitar solos from Pascal Fouquet and Alastair Greene, and the closing track, Crooks, Thieves, and Liars, a soft poignant track that in the “hands” of Long Tall Deb is a beautiful close to a polished release you will want to add to your collection.
