Lloyd by Robert Lloyd 2023 Chardonnay Carneros is a big, bold, gorgeous wine from California that has a rich complexity of enticing aromas on the nose and flavors on the palate that lend itself to pairing with a diverse selection of food. A delectable combination of tropical fruits – pineapple and carambola, apple and pear, and lemon notes on the long and lush finish made food pairing a dream. We paired the wine with our recipe for Luxury Experience – Baked Chicken with Artichokes French, followed by a cheese course and both courses highlighted the undertones of this exceptional wine.

Robert Lloyd and his wife Bonnie founded Lloyd Cellars in 2008 where he is the Winemaker. In addition to Lloyd Cellars, the couple founded Prescription Wines in 2015. Winemaking is their passion, and it shows in the elegant, well-crafted wines that they produce.

Lloyd by Robert Lloyd 2023 Chardonnay Carneros is an exceptional wine with layered nuances of flavors to entice the palate. Made from 100% Chardonnay from the Sangiacomo Vineyards in Los Carneros, the wine is barrel fermented and aged for ten months in American oak and left on the lees until bottling. With 14.5% alcohol, this is a big, bold, delicious wine that shows the winemaker’s finesse and is destined for cellar excellence or to be enjoyed now.

Technical Notes: The grapes were harvested between October 13-22, 2023. The wine was all barrel fermented, 100% malolactic, and bottled on July 10, 2024.

Tasting Notes: The color is a rich golden. The wine has a heady aromatic nose, with tropical fruits – pineapple and carambola, apple and pear, and lemon notes on the palate. The finish is long, viscous, delightful, and elegance in a glass.

Luxury Experience – Baked Chicken with Artichokes French

Chicken Ingredients:

Chicken Breasts, skinless and boneless

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

Garlic, minced

Teaspoons
Fresh Sage, minced
Lemon Peel, chopped

Tablespoons
Lemon Juice
Salt and Pepper

Cornstarch

Method for the Chicken: Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit/204.4 degrees Celsius.

Line a baking dish with parchment.

Mix EVOO with garlic, fresh sage, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Rub mixture all over the chicken breasts. Place chicken breasts on the prepared baking dish, add chopped lemon peel around the chicken. As the chicken breasts bake and release their juices, the lemon peel will help add flavor to the chicken. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes (time may be longer depending on size and thickness of the chicken breasts. Remove aluminum foil and bake for 10 minutes or until done. Remove from the oven, and place chicken breasts on a cutting board. Lightly cover with foil.

Method for the Sauce: Strain the pan juices into a saucepan, mix in 2 teaspoons cornstarch and 2 ounces of water and heat over medium heat until sauce has thickened. Serve sauce separately alongside the chicken and artichoke hearts.

Method for Artichoke Hearts: Create Tempura batter by mixing the flour, cornstarch, rice flour, salt, and pepper together, then add beaten egg and seltzer.

Drain artichoke hearts, lightly dredge in flour, then dip in batter, deep fry until golden. Remove them to paper towels until ready to plate.

Plating Suggestion: Place the chicken breasts on two plates. Add the Artichokes French alongside the chicken. Garnish with fresh sage, and lemon slices, and serve the sauce in individual mini pitchers.

Lloyd by Robert Lloyd 2023 Chardonnay Carneros pairs well with cheeses and we finished our dinner with a Cheese Course with Cheddar with Ginger and Mango cheese, which was the perfect complement to the wine.
