After an exceptionally long, and seemingly endless winter, I am so looking forward to Spring and enjoying my gardens bursting with colorful blooms. As I looked out my windows and still saw snowdrifts on my lawn and my gardens sleeping under fluffy white blankets, I was in desperate need of garden therapy, which I found in the book, Growing Bulbs in the Natural Garden – Innovative Techniques for Combining Bulbs and Perennials in Every Season by Jacqueline van der Kloet, published for Colorblends by Timber Press. Whether you are new to gardening or have a “green thumb” Jacqueline’s book is a perfect guide for getting started as well as learning a few fabulous tips from an experienced and expert garden and landscape designer. I love gardening, or more accurately, I should write, the art of gardening, which bulbs provide in a “one-and-done” time management sort of way. With careful planning and planting, bulb gardens will reward gardeners year after year with their stunning blossoms. However, for many gardeners, me included, the dilemma is always about what to plant, how to plant, when to plant, and where to plant to achieve optimum value and floral impact for time and money spent.
What I especially enjoyed about Growing Bulbs in the Natural Garden – Innovative Techniques for Combining Bulbs and Perennials in Every Season by Jacqueline van der Kloet, are the in-depth chapters that provide guidance for optimal success. Jacqueline takes the reader on a garden adventure with her chapters that include The Basics, Let’s Get Started, Bulbs Everywhere, Designing With Bulbs Around The World, and My Favorites.
There is something interesting to learn in each chapter, beginning with The Basics chapter, which is a perfect guide that includes the history of bulbs, provides the definition of bulbs, what to expect, bulbs for beginners, bulbs for enthusiasts, selecting a color palette, as well as noting what tools are needed to make bulb planting easier, and has something wonderful for various levels of gardeners’ expertise and experience.
After learning the basics of bulb planting, the next chapter, Let’s Get Started readies readers to don their gardening gloves and start planting, followed by chapters that discuss seasonal bulbs, how to design a garden with bulbs, and includes some of Jacqueline’s favorite bulb selections.
While I cannot speed up the arrival of Spring, after reading and enjoying Jacqueline’s book, I am ready to start planning my Summer bulb gardens and eagerly look forward to seeing my Spring bulb gardens, which I planted, in late Autumn last year, come into bloom and surprise me with their burst of color.
