We love exploring new areas, and on a beautiful late Summer day, we took an artful walk in ET’s Landscape Sculpture Farm & Walking Trails in Woodbury, Connecticut. Located at Hogpen Hill Farms, ET’s Landscape Sculpture Farm & Walking Trails consists of 100 large-scale sculptures created by the artist and sculptor Edward “ET” Tufte (pronounced “tough-tee”) nestled on his stunning 234-acre property in Litchfield County. Whimsical, fanciful, and delightful, his inspiring and imaginative large-scale works were created to instill joy and bring a smile to his visitors’ faces. Open weekends from September 5 through November 2, 2025, ET’s Landscape Sculpture Farm & Walking Trails must be visited to genuinely appreciate the creative genius of ET.
On Saturday, September 13, 2025, we took a drive to Woodbury, Connecticut to experience ET’s Landscape Sculpture Farm & Walking Trails. It was a perfect blue sky, warm and sunny, late Summer day that was made for exploring and appreciating nature that was made especially memorable by ET’s fantastical sculptures. As the sculptures are located throughout the 234-acre property, visitors have the opportunity to walk at their own pace to experience ET’s art. Along the way, there are artfully placed benches, fanciful sofas, and rattan chairs for visitors to stop and reflect and appreciate both the art and the spectacular beauty of the surrounding hills and wild meadows with their seasonal offerings.
Our first glimpse of ET’s whimsical approach to sculpture was a giant 12-foot fish, made from aluminum casting, entitled Magritte’s Smile, edition of 5, hanging over the long drive as we entered the property to welcome us and to begin our day of exploration, art, and nature.
Imagine our surprise when we started our walk through the vast landscape and came upon ET’s Rocket Science #3, Airstream Interplanetary Explorer, circa 2011, made of steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and electronics and measuring an astounding 84 feet (26 meters) in length, with a height of 31 feet (9 meters)! An actual Airstream camper is suspended in the air defying gravity and inspiring the imagination.
Also engaging was Rocket Science #2, Lunar Lander, circa 2009, another impressive large-scale work with improbable balance points positioned a short distance from Rocket Science #3. This overwhelming piece measures 70 feet (21 meters) in length and 35 feet (11 meters) high.
Another soaring large-scale work is Larkin’s Twig, which consists of three precariously but perfectly balanced metal “twigs.” We took a leisurely stroll throughout the vast, serene, and tranquil property to fully appreciate and experience the multitude of sculptures that inspired, challenged, and gave us a sense of wonderment at their possibilities.
We also ventured inside Bambouseraie #1, which was a magical walk through a bamboo forest. Dappled light filtered through the delicate leaves casting shadows and interesting light play on the path, and on the woven chair and bench. This was tranquility at its best.
We felt like we had traveled to Stonehenge with ET’s giant Stone Mountain Megaliths and delighted in the carefree style with his Celestial Dancer with Calipers and her DNA, which is the flat metal piece that her limbs, body, and head were crafted from; so that her beginning became an exceptional sculpture on its own.
Although we spent almost 3 hours touring the property and appreciating the sculptures, ET’s Landscape Sculpture Farm & Walking Trails deserves many visits to fully appreciate the art set against the ever-changing sky, and the changing of the seasons.
After our walk, we had the pleasure of meeting the artist and sculptor ET and learned that one of the many benefits of his purchasing Hogpen Hill Farms is that it provides him with the ability to create sculptures without size restrictions like when he had a gallery in Chelsea in New York City. Limitless space in which to create is the ultimate freedom for an artist.
Until next time, keep enjoying and supporting the arts!
