AKB, a hotel bar at Archer Hotel located in the garment and fashion district in Midtown Manhattan, New York offers a desirable location minutes from Grand Central Terminal and a diverse menu of Shareables, Plates, Pizzas, Desserts, and an interesting beverage menu. We stopped for cocktails and Shareables after a lovely day in New York and were delighted with their offerings. Cheers and Bon Appetit!

We had a feeling of déjà vu when we entered Archer Hotel on Saturday, January 11, 2025, and walked into AKB, a hotel bar, where we had a reservation for dinner. AKB is in the space formerly occupied by AVA Social by Charlie Palmer where we had attended its opening party in February 2020. While AVA Social closed, the restaurant, AKB, a hotel bar, continues the standard of great cocktails and cuisine in a comfortable and casual atmosphere.

Hibiscus Margarita

AKB has a well-curated cocktail menu, along with zero-proof cocktails, a selection of beers, and wine. We started with two of their craft cocktails, The Redemption, and the Hibiscus Margarita. The Redemption cocktail was made with Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Angel’s Envy Bourbon, and black walnut bitters, garnished with a large orange peel. and with its cedar smoke with the help of a kitchen torch, its enticing aromas delighted our senses before the cocktail even arrived at our table. Presented in a rocks glass with a large square ice cube, this mezcal and bourbon cocktail was big, bold, and delicious. The Hibiscus Margarita was also very tasty, and made with Pátron Reposado Tequila, Cointreau, Hibiscus Syrup, and Lime, and garnished with a Tajin rim to give the cocktail an intriguing balance of sweet and salty.

The menu has many Sharables that are large enough to share for 2 or more people. We began with one of their new Sharables, their Frites Flight, and if you love French fries, these are a must try item on the menu. The flight trio consisted of three types of hand-cut French fries, rosemary-parmesan, truffle-smoked sea salt, and sweet potato fries accompanied by dipping sauces of siracha mayo, aji Amarillo aioli, and ketchup. All of the fries were crispy and delicious, and we had a hard time deciding which of them were our favorite.

Also very nice was their Surf & Turf Sampler, which was an over-the-top sampler consisting of mouthwatering crab fritters, ritz-crusted calamari, grilled Spanish octopus’ salad with red peppers, celery, and potatoes, crispy and tender Empire wings, and lollipop lamb chops, which were rich and succulent, and presented with a tasty trio of accompanying sauces. We paired the Surf & Turf Sampler with their Mezcal Paloma cocktail, also from the Craft Cocktail section, which was made with Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Cointreau, grapefruit juice, soda water, served in a Collins glass, and garnished with a slice of fresh grapefruit. The cocktail’s slight acidity from the grapefruit juice provided a complementary balance and the perfect soil to the Surf & Turf Sampler items.

Surf & Turf Sampler

The crab fritters were round crispy balls of excellence – crunchy on the outside with rich and flavorful moist crab interiors. The calamari were also well presented with their light and golden cracker crust. The wings were plentiful and delicious with their nice and crispy skin, and the Spanish octopus’ salad was fresh and delicious, however the piece-de-resistance were the three meaty lollipop lamb chops. It is good to note that all the items on the Surf & Turf Sampler are also offered singularly.

Ahi Tuna

We also tried the Ahi-Tuna, which was rare, seared ahi, crusted with sesame seeds, and presented with roasted bok choy, shitake mushrooms, sliced avocado, and yuzu glaze. The tuna also showed the skill of the kitchen with the delicate sear to bring out the rich and fresh flavors of the fish. Complemented by the roasted bok choy, mushrooms, avocado, and delectable yuzu glaze, this dish was a standout.
