A visit to 109 Cheese Market in Kent, Connecticut is like taking your palate on a whirlwind trip across the United States and over to Europe, however, it is much more than a well-stocked artisan cheese market with local and imported cheeses. This charming shop also carries a wide selection of homemade soups, pâtés, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, and homemade muffins, perfect for taking on a picnic, or self-catering your afternoon or evening repast.

109 Cheese Market, Kent, CT
Owned by Monica and Todd Brown, 109 Cheese Market has called Kent home for the past 9 years. They also own a sister shop in Ridgefield that celebrated 15 years. We visited the shop on Friday, March 21, 2025, when the shop was bustling with customers stopping by to pick up gourmet essentials and fell in love with their extensive line of cheeses, some locally made, some from across the United States, and others from Europe.

Monica Brown
A few of the outstanding cheeses from the United States included the award-winning Rogue River Blue from Oregon, Alpha Tolman made from cow’s milk in Jasper Hill, Vermont, Lake’s Edge cheese from Groat, Vermont, Stag Cheddar from Wisconsin, and local cheeses like Hootenanny, and Europa Gouda from Arethusa Farms, locally made in Litchfield, Connecticut, and more.
Customers who prefer imported cheeses will find a delectable selection from Europe. On the day of our visit there was OG Kristal Gouda aged for 18 months, pasteurized cow’s milk cheese from Belgium, Beemster Gouda cheese from Holland, Claddagh Bo Irish Cheddar, Ireland, and Hornbacher, cow’s milk cheese, Alpine style, and Tilsiter raw cow’s milk cheese, Alpine style from Switzerland.
French cheeses were also well represented with Bonde d’Antan, goat pasteurized cheese, Comte, unpasteurized cow’s milk cheese, Delice du Poitou a pasteurized goat cheese, Gaugry, Palet de Bourgogne, a washed rind soft cheese, La Ferme de Liz, Armançon à la Truffe d’été, and many more.
The shop also carries an excellent line of smoked salmon, charcuterie, gourmet sausages from Raven & Boar (Miso Scallion, Bratwurst, Chiang Mai, “Atriax”) and more from East Chatham, New York in the Hudson Valley, as well as frozen food to prepare at home. Appetizers include Croque Monsieur, Pigs in a Blanket, Mac & Cheese made with five types of cheese, Duck Leg Confit, Fiery tomato, and goat cheese tart, housemade flatbreads, and so much more.

Monica Brown
In addition to being a knowledgeable cheese monger, Monica is also a Sommelier, and in the summer, they offer wines by-the-glass on their beautiful patio in the back to pair with their delectable cheeseboards, sandwiches, or other goodies. They also have a diverse selection of well-curated condiments, crackers, and snacks. In addition to their edible items, they also carry a gorgeous line of gifts and also sell flowers.
We enjoyed a selection of their fabulous cheeses and charcuterie, (Shelbourne Clothbound Cheddar from Vermont, Europa Gouda from Connecticut, Tomme Chebris, and Sopressata), along with red grapes, ripe strawberries, and flatbread crackers, paired with prosecco for a perfect “Happy Hour” at The Victorian, where we were staying in Kent.
109 Cheese Market Spring Hours: Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, Sunday from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm.
Until next time, Bon Appetit!
