We love the flowers in our garden, and found that deer do, too. After they ate our oriental lilies, stargazer lilies, gladioli, pansies, tulips, and other tasty flowers, we decided it was time to call in the experts at Colorblends® Wholesale Flowerbulbs located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They have a wonderful and wide variety of bulbs, many of which are deer and rodent resistant. There is nothing as gratifying as looking out the window and seeing your garden bursting with beautiful blooms, however if you are like us, long on desire, but short on time, bulbs are the ultimate in garden time management. While it takes some effort to plant bulbs, they are one and done, meaning you plant them once, then reap their rewards year after year. Happy gardening!

Colorblends Wholesale Flowerbulbs Warehouse
Located in Bridgeport’s Stratfield Historic District, we first “discovered” Colorblends® Wholesale Flowerbulbs when we attended their House & Spring Garden open house, held annually from April to mid-May. Their show garden was spectacular, with a heady mélange of colors, shapes, and fragrances, the result was magical, and we had garden envy.

On November 14, 2025, we made a trip to Colorblends® Wholesale Flowerbulbs to pick up bulbs that are designated to be “Deer and Rodent Resistant.” As a third-generation bulb company they have a long history and exceptional knowledge for providing high-quality products, and offer “top-size flowerbulbs directly to landscape professionals and ambitious residential gardeners at wholesale prices.”

While they offer a gorgeous selection of tulips, in addition to daffodils, hyacinths, irises, specialty bulbs, alliums, and indoor bulbs, our focus was on “Deer and Rodent Resistant” bulbs due to the deer that visit our yard and eat the plants on a regular basis. After a consultation on what would work best for our gardens, we selected the following Deer and Rodent Resistant or Deer and Rodent Proof bulbs: All Aflutter ™Iris Blend (introduced in 2024), Celestial™ Chionodoxa Blend (introduced in 2024), Snowflake Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’, Daffodil Oh Pairs® Blend, Daffodil Bridge Builders™ Blend, Daffodil Evan Scent™ Blend, Daffodil Lucky Number, Allium Purple Rain, Allium Mount Everest, and Allium Globemaster.

Debra’s Garden Plan
As we have had success with daffodils and irises in our gardens in the past, we were very excited about adding some of their new varieties to our gardens. We have been fascinated with alliums, which are gorgeous globes of color when in bloom, and are even stunning after their flowers are spent and only their “skeletons” remain, however this would be the first time planting them.

After returning home from Colorblends® with our garden “treasures” we read their easy-to-follow recommendations and instructions for spacing and planting depth for each of the bulbs we had selected and then set about to create a garden design layout on paper so that we could plant the bulbs and achieve maximum impact. Once the plan was drawn on paper, we placed the bulbs on the ground where we would be digging the holes following the Colorblends® guidelines for depth and spacing, which is labeled on each bag of bulbs. Using a “bulb digger” and a small spade, we dug the holes, gently placed the bulbs inside, covered the bulbs with a layer of soil, and then wished them a good winter’s sleep.

In addition to our garden design on paper, we also marked the locations of our newly planted bulbs with hanging wood plaques which we had marked with the names of the bulbs. Planting done, it was time for us to sit back and let nature take its course. We cannot wait until Spring when the ground warms up, and the fruits of our labor will burst through the ground creating a profusion of color and beauty in the gardens. We will be continuing our story in the Spring when our new bulbs come into bloom. In the meantime, you might enjoy cozying up this winter with the Colorblends® catalog and plan a little garden magic of your own.

Until next time, happy gardening!

Delivery Information:
“The flowerbulb crop for fall planting arrives in the United States in mid-September. We begin delivering bulbs during the last week of September. Planting time for tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and other spring-flowering bulbs is late September through December—when soil temperatures drop to about 55℉. We ship to colder areas first, working our way south (and west) as the weather cools. If you would like us to deliver your bulbs at a particular time, let us know. During the checkout process on this website, you will have the option of selecting a delivery week. If you do not select a delivery week, we will deliver your order according to your USDA Zone and the weather in your area. Please see the Shipping Charges page for information about shipping costs to each state.”
Prechilled Bulbs:
“Tulips and many other spring-flowering bulbs that are to be planted in southern and western Zones 7b–10, where soil temperatures do not cool down sufficiently in winter, should be prechilled in a refrigerator (not a freezer) for 6–12 weeks before planting. If you have a spare refrigerator, we suggest you request delivery of your bulbs in mid-October. If you are placing a larger order (e.g., one that includes 1200 tulips or more), Colorblends may be able to prechill your bulbs for you. We charge a flat fee of $50 per order for this service. The delivery time will depend on your location and your planting schedule. Please see our Prechilling page for more information about prechilling.”
Schippercrates:
“The best shipping crates in the business! Orders for 600 or more tulips or 200 or more large daffodil bulbs are usually shipped in sturdy, stackable, reusable plastic Schippercrates with many uses: recycling bins, irrigation parts storage, you name it.”
