Renowned contemporary sculptor Bruno Catalano made his mark on New York on May 18, 2024, with the exhibition of his large-scale “Voyage À New York” sculptures that began with a ribbon cutting in the Murray Hill Neighborhood on Park Avenue and continued with his impressive smaller scale sculptures at the private opening reception of his solo exhibition at Galeries Bartoux in SoHo, which runs until June 18, 2024. If you love contemporary art, a gallery visit should be on your “must do” list.

Bruno Catalano brings an interesting perspective to life and to art. He was born in 1960 in Morocco, moved to Marseille, France at the age of ten, and started traveling at the age of twenty working on boats. He discovered sculpture in the 1990s, and It is apt then that his first time in New York was for his exhibition entitled, “Voyagers/Travelers.”

We attended the opening ceremony and ribbon cutting on May 18, 2024, and were touched by the heartfelt opening remarks by Robert Bartoux, Founder and Executive Director, Galeries Bartoux and Bruno Catalano. The impressive large-scale sculptures measure 10-feet in height and tower above Park Avenue beginning at East 38th Street (across from The Prince Kitano New York hotel located at 66 Park Avenue at East 38th Street) and continue until East 34th Street.

After exploring the breathtaking nine sculptures that defy gravity along Park Avenue, we continued to a private opening reception sponsored by Champagne Pommery at Galeries Bartoux at 114 Wooster Street, where Champagne Pommery Brut Royal flowed all night paired with interesting art conversations with the artist, the Galeries Bartoux team, and other art collectors, learning the inspiration and the stories behind the sculptures.

Champagne Pommery has set the standard for Brut Champagne excellence since 1874 and has long had an affinity for the arts. In 1882 they commissioned sculptures for their famous cellars and continue to be active supporters of the arts.

While Bruno Catalano’s large-scale sculptures on Park Avenue dazzled our senses with their sheer size, his evocative smaller scale works at Galeries Bartoux captured our imaginations with their bold presentations and exquisite detail down to the buckles on boots and laces on shoes.

Every artist has their own source of inspiration, and for Bruno Catalano, inspiration was in the form of a casting flaw, which created a gap in his work. He liked the result, and the ragged look has become his signature and adds layers of depth to the characters of each of the people represented in the sculptures. Our interpretation is that when you look at one of his travelers sculptures the missing sections are like not knowing their complete story, letting your imagination fill in the blanks of the sculpture as well as the story of their lives.

Bruno Catalano also works in marble and his stunning draped marble sculptures were inspired by his end of the day ritual of draping cloths over his clay models to prevent the clay from drying out. His skill and artistry in both his stone and bronze sculptures make him an artist that draws appreciation from art collectors. He is truly a master sculptor and a genius of contemporary art.

If you live in New York City or in the Tri-State area or our planning a visit Manhattan, do take time to visit Galeries Bartoux to see Bruno Catalano’s solo exhibition (until June 18, 2024) and stop and appreciate his large-scale sculptures located along Park Avenue (until May 2025).
