Since 1981, Greenwich Polo Club has been presenting high-goal polo matches in breathtakingly beautiful backcountry Greenwich, Connecticut. A stunning venue, fast-paced action on the field set amidst a social scene that is a highlight of the summer season, is just a part of what makes the Greenwich Polo Club matches so enjoyable. The American Cup was especially exciting as it was a double-header match with team Amaro/Quench vs Steel Polo in the first match, and Maccabi Polo vs Round Hill Polo in the second match. With the band, MOJO setting the mood in the Players’ Lounge, it was another perfect Sunday afternoon at the Greenwich Polo Club.
The 2024 East Coast High Goal Series consists of the American Cup (12 goal), East Coast Silver Cup (16 goal), East Coast Gold Cup (16 goal), East Coast Open by Audi (20 goal), and the Greenwich Cup (12 goal). Important to note about the East Coast Open by Audi is that it is “the most historic and prestigious tournaments in polo. Capturing the East Coast Open is a career-highlighting achievement for any polo player.”
We attended the season opener, the American Cup on Sunday, June 9, 2024, to get a jump start on the Greenwich Polo Club season. It was a beautiful blue-sky day in backcountry Greenwich and the appreciative fans came out in abundance for the double match American Cup.
Sunday, June 9, 2024 – American Cup – 12 Goal
As there were 2 matches played, instead of playing 6 Chukkers each, with the traditional stomping of the divots after the 3rd Chukker, the matches consisted of 5 Chukkers, with a 6th Chukker added if the match was tied at the end of the 5th Chukker. The traditional stomping of the divots took place after the first match ended.

The time-honored tradition of stomping the divots followed as a bridge between the first and second matches. Adults, children, and well-behaved dogs strutted their stuff on the playing field stomping down the grass upturned by the horses’ hooves.

Your Guide to Polo
Chukkers
The match is divided into 6 periods called Chukkers lasting 7.5 minutes each. After the 3rd chukker, there is the traditional stomping of the divots to replace the grass that the galloping horses’ hooves raise.
The Field
Polo is played on a field that is 300 yards by 160 yards (the size of 10 football fields.)
Polo Ponies
Although they are called polo ponies, they are full-grown horses. Each player typically brings 6-8 polo ponies (or more) to use in a match. Horses are swapped throughout the match to keep the horses and their riders fresh. The top speed of a polo pony is 35 mph, and the speed of a polo ball can reach 100 mph.
Player Positions
Handicaps
Players are given a handicap level from -2 to 10 goals depending on their ability, with -2 the lowest, and 10 goal the highest possible. A 10-goaler player is considered the best and there are less than 100 players who have achieved this ranking. Handicaps are evaluated throughout the year and the number assigned in goals is the player’s value to the team, not the number of goals expected from the player.
A team’s handicap is calculated by adding the 4 players’ handicaps together.
Goals
There are 2 goal posts at each end of the field. When a team scores a goal, the direction of the play changes to the other direction. This keeps the conditions even throughout the match.
As always, it was a perfect Sunday afternoon of high-goal polo at the Greenwich Polo Club, and we cannot wait for the rest of the season. If you want to have fun, gather some friends, and experience Greenwich Polo Club for yourself. It is fabulous!
Until our next adventure…
