The excitement of Major League Show Jumping (MLSJ) returned to the Greenwich Polo Club in backcountry Greenwich, Connecticut, with the CSI*5 Grand Prix of Greenwich 2025 Major League Show Jumping held on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, 2025. After a Summer of so-so weather, fans were rewarded with two glorious blue-sky warm Autumn days to watch the Show Jumping with competitors representing 14 countries. It was an exciting weekend of show jumping at its best.

The first time we experienced Major League Show Jumping was in 2024 in Greenwich, when we attended the last day of the competition, when the rain tried its hardest but did not daunt the spirits of the dedicated fans. While the weather was dismal, the competition was stellar, and it whetted our appetite for this fascinating and daring sport that is equally dependent on the skill of both the rider and the horse.

This year, we returned for both days of the MLSJ competition on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, 2025, when the weather was perfect and the fans came out in abundance for the sold-out competition.
For the CSI*5 Grand Prix of Greenwich 2025, the international field of competitors came from 14 different countries representing Belgium, Brazil, Canada. Columbia, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand, Portugal, Quatar, and the United States.

It was a thrilling two-days of watching top riders compete with the excitement of “clear rounds” and the disappointment of “refusals” and “knockdowns” that diminish a rider’s chance to win where each second on the clock counts and a mere fraction of a second can determine first, second, and third place.

The United States was well represented with Kent Farrington taking home the win and his eighth five-star Grand Prix win of the year, with Marilyn Little coming in fourth and Jessica Springstein coming in fifth.

Interesting to Know About Show Jumping
Interesting to note about Show Jumping is that both male and female riders compete against one another. This equestrian sport requires an elevated level of skill and dexterity by both the rider and the horse who must be in perfect sync to complete the course in record time and jump over the different obstacles positioned around the course.

Riders walk the course beforehand to get a feel for it by pacing the course and measuring the distance between each of the obstacles and inspecting them.

Pacing the course
Each of the obstacles on the course have railings (poles) that are designed to fall out if a horse knocks into them. This is to protect the horse and rider.
If a railing falls during the jump, it is called a knockdown, and a fault (penalty) is given.

A refusal is when the horse stops before the obstacle or goes around it to avoid jumping over it. If the horse does this twice, it is referred to as a second refusal and results in elimination.
If the horse or rider falls, the result is also elimination.
When a rider has a clean ride around the course (without faults), it is declared a Clear Round.
