Revelers – Camelot
The musical, Camelot, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe, based on The Once and Future King by T.H. White, original production directed and staged by Moss Hart, with book adapted by David Lee, new orchestrations by Steve Orich and directed by Mark Lamos, closes out the Westport Country Playhouse’s 2016 play season. We saw the play on Saturday, October 8, 2016 and it was a night to remember!

WCP’s Mark Lamos has established himself in the theatre world as a preeminent director and under his superb directorship, every detail of the play worked seamlessly at capturing the essence of the legendary Camelot. Michael Yeargan‘s scenic design was visually stunning, the costumes by Wade Laboissonnier were gorgeous, Connor Gallagher brought the element of style to his choreography, and the cast was marvelous at bringing the dramatic story of Camelot, King Arthur, Guenevere, Lancelot, and Mordred to life.

The cast was exceptionally well chosen with Robert Sean Leonard in the role of the handsome, noble, fair, and kind King Arthur, whose heart is later broken by Guenevere and Lancelot. His impressive credentials include Broadway and London stage work, regional theatre, a Tony award, multi-Tony nominations, many films, and eight seasons on the television show, House.

Britney Coleman, whom we last saw in the WCP performance of Sing for Your Shakespeare, dazzles in the role of the beautiful Guenevere with her lovely vocals and on-stage chemistry with both King Arthur and Lancelot.
Stephen Mark Lukas in the role of Lancelot was sublime in eliciting the best from the audience whether delivering comedic lines or pulling at our heartstrings as he ultimately has to choose between his loyalty to King Arthur and his love for the lovely Guenevere. Interesting to note is that among his many credentials are both Broadway and touring performances of The Book of Mormon, where he worked with both Mike Evariste and Jon-Michael Reese on the tour.

Patrick Andrews, whom we last saw in the WCP’s 2016 performance of Red, nails the role of the evil Mordred, who arrives to stir up trouble and succeeds at bringing destruction and chaos to Camelot.
Other impressive cast performances include those by Michael De Souza in the roles of a Reveler, Squire Dap, and Young Page, Mike Evariste as a Reveler and Dinadan, Brian Owen with his booming voice as a Reveler and Lionel, Jon-Michael Reese as a Reveler and Sagramore, and 11-year old Sana "Prince" Sarr in the role of Tom who opens the play, appears throughout, and already shows his "star" power.

From beginning to end, the story of Camelot and the actors who breathed life into its characters was magical! For 2 hours and 5 minutes we left the world of Westport Connecticut behind and were transported to Camelot and to the days of the Knights of the Round Table.

Camelot is a must see "adventure" for all ages that will leave you enchanted. As for the performance we saw on October 8, 2016, the audience rewarded the cast with a well deserved standing ovation. Bravo for an exceptional evening of theatre!

The Westport Country Playhouse named as "Theatre Company of the Year" in December 2013 by The Wall Street Journal, opened in the 1930s in a transformed 1835 cow barn, which has, and continues to attract, a "who’s who" of prominent actors. Looking at the framed posters of past shows that line the lobby walls was like entering an encyclopedia of the arts. A few of the many renowned actors who have appeared on the stage there include Ethyl Barrymore, Dorothy and Lillian Gish, Tallulah Bankhead, Gloria Swanson, Don Ameche, Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy, Jane Fonda, Danny Aiello, Blythe Danner, Jill Clayburgh, Richard Dreyfus, Whoopi Goldberg, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Lynn Redgrave, Gene Wilder, and Westport residents Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman.
"Westport Country Playhouse, a not-for-profit theater, serves as a cultural nexus for patrons, artists and students and is a treasured resource for the State of Connecticut. There are no boundaries to the creative thinking for future seasons or the kinds of audiences and excitement for theater that Westport Country Playhouse can build."
