HARMONY, A New Musical at the Music Theatre of Connecticut (MTC) in Norwalk, Connecticut may very well be the best play that we have seen in years. We fell in love with HARMONY from the first notes of music composed by Barry Manilow, with Book and Lyrics by Bruce Sussman, even before the talented cast stepped on stage and spoke a line of dialogue. Directed by Kevin Connors, and starring Michael Alonzo, Helen Clarke, Cameron Edris, Jazmin Gorsline, Quinlyn Kessler, Christian Libonati, Matt Mancuso, Frank Mastrone, Dominic Pagliaro, Constantine Pappas, Michelle Pauker, Robert Peterpaul, Jeff Raab, Jim Schilling, and Joseph Torello, the musical tells the true story of The Comedian Harmonists, a male singing group in Berlin, Germany in the late 1920s. Their careers rose from humble beginnings to achieve international success before Nazi Germany came crashing down and changed their lives forever. HARMONY is a must-see play that will touch your heart. The play runs until September 27, 2026.

Michael Alonzo (Chopin), Cameron Edris (Erich), Christian Libonati (Lesh), Dominc Pagliaro (Bobby), Jeff Raab (Harry), Constatine Pappas (Young Rabbi) – Harmony
The Comedian Harmonists came together when Harry, played by Jeff Raab, put an ad in the newspaper looking for 5 male singers to sing harmony for a new group. The men that show up for the audition come from diverse and disparate backgrounds; Chopin played by Michael Alonzo plays piano in a brothel, Lesh played by Christian Libonati is a waiter from Bulgaria, Erich played by Cameron Edris is a medical student who finds he cannot tolerate the sight of blood, Bobby the bass played by Dominic Pagliaro, and (Young) Rabbi played by Constantine Pappas left the pogroms of Poland for the safe haven of Germany.

Michael Alonzo (Chopin), Cameron Edris (Erich), Christian Libonati (Lesh), Dominc Pagliaro (Bobby), Jeff Raab (Harry), Constatine Pappas (Young Rabbi) – Harmony
Despite their many differences, these six men ultimately became friends and went on to have an international career that would take them well beyond Berlin to Copenhagen to London and to New York to Carnegie Hall. Spanning the years 1927 until 1935, they would appear in 21 films and achieve great success before Nazi Germany stepped in and pronounced that Jews could no longer work in entertainment, and when it became known that 3 of the members of the group were Jewish, and that Chopin’s wife, Ruth, played by Michelle Pauker, was also Jewish, they were prohibited from working and performing.

Frank Mastrone (Rabbi) – Harmony
What ultimately happens to each of them will tear at your heart. The play is narrated by the (Older) Rabbi played to perfection by Broadway veteran Frank Mastrone at the autumn years of his life in 1988 at the age of 87 as he reflects upon his life with The Comedian Harmonists, and life with his wife, Mary, played by Jazmin Gorsline.

Matt Mancuso (Standartenfuher) – Harmony
The music by Barry Manilow is gorgeous, and the book by Bruce Sussman is nothing short of brilliant, however it is the talented cast that wows the audience with their deliver of this touching and heartfelt story, their perfect harmonies, and their synchronized dance numbers. Whether performing comedic segments or delivering difficult dramatic moments, they truly excel.

Christian Libonati (Lesh), Joseph Torello (Titus) – Harmony
Rounding out this stellar cast is Matt Mancuso as the Standartenfuher, Joseph Torello as Titus/Obsersturmfuher, Helen Clare as Rosa and others, Quinlyn Kessler as Clara and others, and Jim Schilling as Fritz/Ezra and others. Jim replaced Robert Peterpaul on the night we attended as Robert was at the hospital awaiting the birth of his first baby. (Congratulations, Robert!)

Michael Alonzo (Chopin), Cameron Edris (Erich), Christian Libonati (Lesh), Dominc Pagliaro (Bobby), Jeff Raab (Harry), Constatine Pappas (Young Rabbi) – Harmony
HARMONY is an impactful play that should be on your radar to see. It played on Broadway in 2023, and it was so powerful that Director Kevin Connors noted at the introduction on the play that he found the story was so compelling that he wanted to direct it and bring it to the Music Theatre of Connecticut (MTC), and for that, we are forever grateful. This was The Connecticut Professional Regional Premiere of HARMONY, A New Musical.

Constantine Pappas (Young Rabbi), Jazmin Gorsline (Mary) – Harmony
The play has a runtime of 2 hours and 25 minutes with a 15-minute intermission, which flew by as the music, acting, and singing kept us enthralled and on the edge of our seats. It is an emotional rollercoaster of a play that will have you laughing out loud at the comedic antics and crying or sniffling at the play’s culmination, a true test of dramatic excellence. Bravo!

Michelle Pauker (Ruth), Quinlyn Kessler (Clara), Joesph Torello (Titus) – Harmony
HARMONY is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials supplied by The Licensing House (TLH), www.tlhshows.com.
