William Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor performed by The Oberon Theatre Ensemble in New York took the audience on a delightful tale of merriment and mischief.
The Oberon Theatre Ensemble presented William Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by Brad Fryman, with original music created by Mickey Zetts, for 10 performances in March 2007 at the Lion Theater on Theatre Row in New York. I attended the March 27, 2007 performance and enjoyed the twist on this William Shakespeare classic play, expertly performed by the ensemble cast.
Taking a few liberties with William Shakespeare's play, the Oberon Theatre Ensemble set The Merry Wives of Windsor in present day Windsor, USA instead of Windsor, UK, and combined with original music by Mickey Zetts (creator of Apathy - The Gen X Musical), took the audience on an evening of rollicking fun and twisting tales as Falstaff, a rock and roll knight (played by Brad Fryman) tries to unsuccessfully simultaneously pursue two married women (Mistress Page - played by Kate Ross, and Mistress Ford - played by Laura Shiner) with a love letter. When the women learn the truth that they are both being pursued and received the identical letter, they plot together to teach Falstaff a lesson with wickedly funny results. When the husbands learn of Falstaff's designs on their wives, the tale takes on another twist, as they too, plot to seek their revenge.
A second theme of the play is the lovely Mistress Anne Page (played by Mary Sheridan), daughter of the Mistress Page (pursued by Falstaff), who is sought after by a colorful trio of characters in the county, and whose parents each have their own plan for who shall have her hand in marriage. However, Mistress Anne Page has her own ideas about love, and eventually sneaks off to be married with her true love in a covert plan, much to her disgruntled parents' chagrin. The play ends on a humorous note and all is forgiven.
