Laura Eason’s contemporary dramatic play, Sex With Strangers at the Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut, is an on-the-mark brilliant portrayal of modern-day love and dating and resonates soundly with the "media age" where the internet is part of our daily lives, and its consequences are even more interesting. The play runs from September 26 – October 14, 2017, and is a "must-see."

The plot of Sex With Strangers – "Is the person you’re lying with in bed lying to you online? Lust turns to sex, and dating turns to something more complicated when Ethan, a sexy young blogger-turned-bestselling-author, meets Olivia, an unpublished thirty-something novelist. This provocative new play follows the unexpected twists and turns of modern relations as ambitions turn dark and self-reinvention is just a click away."

With that introduction, we eagerly looked forward to seeing the play at the Westport Country Playhouse, which we did on October 3, 2017. Written by playwright Laura Eason, the play premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago in 2011.

Directed by Katherine M. Carter, Sex With Strangers has two characters, stunningly played to perfection by the talented Jessica Love as Olivia, and Chris Ghaffari as Ethan, whom we had the pleasure of seeing in the Westport Country Playhouse’s performance of playwright Joe Orton’s brilliantly funny, fast-paced play, What the Butler Saw. In Sex With Strangers, Chris Ghaffari proves his depth as an actor whom can easily transition from comedic to more dramatic roles.

Fast-paced, witty, yet often intense dialogue, and enough on-stage chemistry between Olivia and Ethan to heat the Westport Country Playhouse for the winter, Sex With Strangers is a play that kept us enthralled from start to finish. In a time where you can Google a name and "meet" and read about a person before you meet them, rather than the old-fashioned way of getting to know them over time, dating takes on another dimension where transparency not always produces desired results.

A beautiful set design by Edward T. Morris, lighting by Alan Edwards, and sound design by Beth Lake helped create a world in which we could escape for a few hours as we became engrossed in the play and the intertwining lives and plot twists of Olivia and Ethan. Sex With Strangers is a definite winner and a 2017 season must-see play!

The Westport Country Playhouse Box Office is open during Performance Days Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 pm until 8:30 pm, Saturday from 11:00 am until 8:30 pm, Sunday from 11:00 am until 3:30 pm, and is closed on Monday. Non-Performance Days, the Box Office is open Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 pm until 6:00 pm, and is closed on Monday.

The Westport Country Playhouse named as "Theatre Company of the Year" in December 2013 by The Wall Street Journal, opened in the 1930s in a transformed 1835 cow barn, which has, and continues to attract, a "who’s who" of prominent actors. Looking at the framed posters of past shows that line the lobby walls was like entering an encyclopedia of the arts. A few of the many renowned actors who have appeared on the stage there include Ethyl Barrymore, Dorothy and Lillian Gish, Tallulah Bankhead, Gloria Swanson, Don Ameche, Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy, Jane Fonda, Danny Aiello, Blythe Danner, Jill Clayburgh, Richard Dreyfus, Whoopi Goldberg, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Lynn Redgrave, Gene Wilder, and Westport residents Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman.
