Royal Southern Brotherhood at StageOne, Fairfield, CT PDF Print E-mail
Written by Debra C. Argen and Edward F. Nesta
The Royal Souther Brotherhood Band - photo by Luxury ExperienceThe Royal Southern Brotherhood: Cyril Neville, Mike Zito, Devon Allman, Yonrico Scott, and Charlie Wooten gave an impressive Blues Rock performance with a little Funk and Soul thrown in for good measure at the Fairfield Theatre Company's StageOne in Fairfield, Connecticut and of course, Luxury Experience was there.

Royal indeed, musical lineage does not come any finer than the Royal Southern Brotherhood billed as "The Soul of the South." The band's impressive line-up includes Grammy® Award winner, singer, songwriter, poet, percussionist Cyril Neville (youngest brother of Art, Aaron, and Charlie Neville), singer, songwriter, guitarist Devon Allman (son of Gregg and nephew of the late Duane Allman), singer, songwriter, blues guitarist Mike Zito, singer, songwriter, bassist Charlie Wooten, and Grammy® Award winner, drummer Yonrico Scott.

Experiencing a Royal Southern Brotherhood performance is somewhat like watching a shooting star in that you cannot help but be amazed. New Orleans born and bred, percussionist Cyril Neville conjures up a bit of magic with his vocals. Next, there is the St. Louis guitarist Devon Allman, who proves his musical DNA runs deep and is every bit a showman who can wail out lyrics and plays a mean guitar. Bluesman Mike Zito grew up in St. Louis, now calls Texas home, has impressive vocals, and can blister a guitar riff faster than the eye can blink. Louisiana-born Charlie Wooten is the ultra-cool bass player, and Yonrico Scott, raised in Detroit and now lives in Atlanta, brings his impressive background of songwriter and drummer to the mix.

We saw the Royal Southern Brotherhood perform on August 19, 2013 at the intimate 225-seat Fairfield Theatre Company's StageOne in Fairfield, Connecticut. The ambience is like sitting in a friend's living room with seating on three sides of the stage allowing performers to connect with the audience, and it was the perfect venue for spending an evening with the opening act Clarence Bucaro and the Royal Southern Brotherhood.

The talented singer, songwriter, guitarist Clarence Bucaro opened for the Royal Southern Brotherhood playing acoustic guitar and harmonica and singing a few cuts off his latest 12-track CD, Dreaming From the Heart of New York featuring all original material produced by Anders Osborne and released on the Twenty Twenty Records label.

A few of the featured songs included Curtis Mayfield, Don't Know Much About Love, and the title cut, Dreaming in the Heart of New York. Born in Cleveland with musical roots in Los Angeles and New Orleans, Clarence now calls Brooklyn, New York home, so we look forward to hearing him play again soon.

The Royal Southern Brotherhood took to the stage with wild applause from the audience who were ready for Blues Rock with a little New Orleans Funk and Soul mixed in, and opened the set with the rollicking song, You Can Run, But You Can't Hide, off Cyril Neville's Magic Honey CD. Next, they segued into Hurts My Heart, Gotta Keep Rockin', Moonlight Over The Mississippi, Left My Heart In Memphis, and Fire On The Mountain, off the self-titled Royal Southern Brotherhood CD.

Over the course of the evening, Devon Allman and Mike Zito would trade singing lead vocals and playing lead guitar interspersed with solos to feature each member's talents, which included a great duet with Charlie Wooten and Yonrico Scott that segued into an outstanding drum solo by Yonrico Scott.

The band ventured into an impressive cover of the Rolling Stones' song, Happy, with Devon singing lead vocals. Could Get Dangerous, a great cut off Devon Allman's Honeytribe - Space Age Blues CD, and Natural Born Lover off Mike Zito's Pearl River CD with Mike singing lead vocals followed, before segueing into the RSB songs, Fired Up!, and New Horizons, that smartly closed out the set.

The band returned to the stage after a thundering standing ovation, and launched into the song, Time Machine, a cut off Devon Allman's CD, Turquoise, released on the Ruf Records label. They closed out the performance with another Rolling Stone cover, Gimme Shelter with Cyril's lead vocals creating an electrically charged culmination on what Devon Allman referred to as "a school night (Sunday)."

"Established in 2004, StageOne is a 225-seat venue in the heart of downtown Fairfield, Connecticut. Originally built primarily for theatre productions, StageOne is consistently voted as the best place to hear live music in the entire region because of the quality of the sound, the intimacy of the space, and the caliber of the artists. There is literally not a bad seat in the house and there are few venues in the country where the fans can be so close to the world-renowned artists who grace the stage in over 200 concerts and productions a year. The artists love to perform here and frequently cite StageOne as their absolute favorite venue. This brings out the very best in them, which is reflected in the quality of their performances and enjoyment of their fans."
