Rodrigo y Gabriela Rodrigo y Gabriela, the internationally renowned instrumental acoustic guitar rock duo performed before a sold-out show at The Beacon Theatre in New York City, New York for a memorable evening of music. Hailing from Mexico City, Mexico, Rodrigo Sanchez’s and Gabriela Quintero’s music is a perfect blend of instrumental rock and flamenco nuevo. The dynamic duo had the audience on their feet for several standing ovations throughout their exceptional show. The Irish band Hudson Taylor opened for Rodrigo y Gabriela.

The lads from Dublin, Ireland, the folk-rock HudsonTaylor band comprised of brothers Harry and Alfie Hudson Taylor along with 2 band mates set the stage for an evening of exciting music for Rodrigo y Gabriela’s sold-out show at The Beacon Theatre (2,600-seat capacity) on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

Hudson Taylor

Like many musicians, Hudson Taylor started their career by busking, (playing in the streets), of Dublin beginning in 2011. Inspired by Rodrigo y Gabriela, whom they had met in Dublin, Hudson Taylor opened the set with the song, Travellin’. Next in the line-up was Care, followed by thesong Butterflies. The band engaged the audience and had us singing the chorus for the song, Don’t know why. Alfie brought the sound of Ireland to The Beacon as he played the bodhran on the song, Old Soul, then the band segued into the song, One in a million. The band deftly closed the set with the song, Battles, earning them the audience’s respect and making new friends.

We first heard the music of Rodrigo y Gabriela on late-night radio around 15 years ago and immediately thought, wow, who are they? Since then we have watched their career rocket and have been following them ever since. Their musicianship is mesmerizing, the craftsmanship of their style engaging and powerful, and seeing them perform live with the energy flowing was outstanding.

The show was a fabulous evening of new and older music spanning their 20-year career that began when they were 15 years old. Moving from Mexico City to Galway, Ireland, where they lived for 8 years, they began crafting and honing their distinctive signature sound. Their music has provided them with the opportunity to tour throughout Europe and internationally, garnering new fans along the way paved with hard-work and an abundance of talent.

Rodrigo y Gabriela excited the audience by playing select cuts off their new Mettavolution album that hit the streets on April 26, 2019, and was 5 years in the making. Songs included Krotona Days, Cumbe, Witness Tree, Echoes, Mettavolution, Electric Soul, and Terracentric.

Fans of Rodrigo y Gabriela also appreciated a look back through their storied career with the song, Tamacun, off their 2006 eponymous album, Rodrigo y Gabriela, as well as 2 cuts off their 2009 album, 11:11, with Hanuman and 11:11, and Soundmaker off their 2014 album, 9 Dead Alive.

The best part of a live performance though is the interaction that occurs between the artists and the audience, and veteran musicians Rodrigo y Gabriela have that mastered. Whether engaging the audience with their stories or performing mini-solos, they had the audience at the edge of their seats, and oftentimes on their feet when the stirring music and the magic of the moment could not be confined to sitting in a chair.

As longtime fans of Rodrigo y Gabriela, seeing them perform live at The Beacon Theatre in New York City was an incomparable musical memory. Bravo!

Until next time, keep enjoying the music and supporting the arts!

About The Beacon Theatre:

"The legendary Beacon Theatre is a 2,600-seat venue built in 1929and designed in the art deco style by architect Walter Ahlschlager. Designateda New York landmark building by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Committee in 1979 and acquired by MSGE in 2006, the Beacon has become a venerable rock roomfor generations of New Yorkers and an intimate setting for unforgettableconcerts and events. The Madison Square Garden Company completed a majorrestoration of the Beacon Theatre in February 2009, returning the theater toits original Roaring Twenties grandeur. The reinvention was based on extensive historic research, as well as detailed, on-site examination of original, decorative painting techniques that had been covered by decades-old layers of paint. The Beacon Theatre has won several architectural awards recognizing its outstanding restoration."
