The Rebirth Brass Band, founded by brothers Phil and Keith Frazier in 1983, is a highly acclaimed and celebrated brass band from New Orleans that deftly combines traditional with modern music and adds a little brass funk in the mix. Twenty eight years since its inception, Phil Frazier says that it has been a "hard road, but a good road."

On February 10, 2012, the Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut got into the spirit of Mardi Gras decorating the performance center with green, gold, and purple balloons, the traditional colors of New Orleans, and sequined and feather masks for the guests.

Mardi Gras (called Carnaval in many parts of the world) is an annual celebration combining music, dance, parades, parties, and traditional food that culminates the night before Ash Wednesday. In 2012, the Mardi Gras season began on January 6, the Twelfth Night (the Epiphany) and will end on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

Keith Frazier
The talented Rebirth Brass Band featuring Keith Frazier on Bass Drum, Derrick Tabb on Snare Drum, Phil Frazier on Tuba, Stafford Agee on Trombone, Glen Andrews on Trumpet, Derek Shezbie on Trumpet, Chadrick Honore on Trumpet, and Vincent Broussard on Sax brought a taste of New Orleans and Mardi Gras with their unique brand of brass and funk music. In addition to being Mardi Gras season, it was also Phil Frazier's birthday, and the mixed aged audience was ready to celebrate.

Although a long way from New Orleans, their music including the songs, Exactly Like You, and What Goes Around Comes Around, off their Rebirth Brass Band - Rebirth of New Orleans release, captured the sights and sounds of the Crescent City recalling images of Jackson Square, the delicious aromas of chicory coffee and beignets, the calliope sound of the steamboats on the Mississippi River, and the musical heartbeat for those familiar with the famed city, and a delicious introductory taste for those who have yet had the pleasure of visiting.

For over an hour, as the band moved through their numbers, the audience got into the music by clapping their hands, moving their heads, and tapping their feet. Little by little though, the audience began slipping quietly out of their amphitheatre-seats, which although comfortable, seemed to be too confining for the music. Soon people were lining the walls so that they could dance to the music. When the band invited those so inclined to come up and join them on stage to dance, there was no hesitation. The stage was soon filled with all ages dancing to the music, getting into the groove, and into the spirit of Mardi Gras with one gentleman even twirling a handkerchief, New Orleans-style, while dancing. All that was missing were parasols, Sazerac cocktails, and King Cake; maybe next time.

Two nights after performing at the Quick Center for the Arts, the band took home a 2012 Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album for their release Rebirth Brass Band - Rebirth of New Orleans, (which Luxury Experience reviewed in the Music Scene). Congratulations to the Rebirth Brass Band and its producers Tracey Freeman and Mark Samuels.
