2017 Best Latin Jazz Album Grammy-nominee Nilson Matta (for Trio de Paz 30) and his Brazilian Voyage Trio transported the audience at the Southampton Arts Center, located in Southampton, New York to Brazil via their inspired music. Renowned composer and musician Nilson Matta is considered to be one of the top bass players in the world, and together with the talented multi-Grammy winner Oriente López on piano and flute, and award-winning Mauricio Zottarelli on drums, they created a spectacular evening of Jazz, Brazilian-style.
Nilson Matta
Although all three now reside in New York City, Nilson Matta is
originally from Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Mauricio Zottarelli is from
the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and Oriente López is from Havana, Cuba, whom
Nilson introduced as being Brazilian in his heart.

Mauricio Zottarelli
There were many musical highlights throughout the concert as
Nilson Matta and the Brazilian Voyage Trio took the audience on an instrumental
musical journey presenting music from the many regions of Brazil including Bahia,
Rio de Janeiro, and more.

Oriente López
The trio performed many of Nilson Matta's original compositions,
as well as compositions written by some of the Brazilian greats, including two
works composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim (1927 - 1994), whose many works have
become Jazz standards. Two of the Jobim highlights included the songs Manhã de Carnaval and Samba de Orfeu, which he composed for
the 1959 film, Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus). Another important Brazilian
composer was Noel de Medeiros Rosa (1910 - 1937), whom the trio honored by
performing his Conversa de Botequim,
written in 1935. In the creative hands of Nilson Matta, Mauricio Zottarelli,
and Oriente López, the trio created a high-energy, engaging performance that
had us, as well as the rest of the audience, dancing in our seats.

Debra C. Argen and Nilson Matta
Not only is the talented Nilson Matta an outstanding upright bass
player, he is also a well-known composer, and the trio ended the evening with
the Nilson Matta composition entitled Paraty,
which he dedicated to the beautiful, historic colonial city located in the
state of Rio de Janeiro, between the cities of São Paulo and Rio of Janeiro,
and played with much love. It was the perfect end to a wonderful evening of
music. As they say in Brazil, it was maravilhoso
(marvelous)!

Delicious refreshments including a refreshing Róse Sangria and
passed hors d'oeuvres provided compliments of Union
