We had the pleasure of attending Million Dollar Quartet on opening night, Friday, April 29, 2022, which was the first play of the season by The Westchester Theatre at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center. The Westchester Theatre was formerly the Westchester Broadway Theatre located in Elmsford, New York for forty-six years before the pandemic and the loss of their lease caused their closure. Happily, they have found a beautiful new home at the Chappaqua Performing Arts built in 2017 and located inside the Chappaqua Crossings Complex. While the venue is different, they are dedicated to providing their same high-caliber performances as when they were located in Elmsford, New York.

Million Dollar Quartet is based on a true story and takes place at the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee on December 4, 1956, when for one night only the young musicians, Elvis Presley (1935-1977), Carl Perkins (1932-1998), Johnny Cash (1932-2003), and Jerry Lee Lewis (born in 1935) gathered together and performed for Sam Phillips (1923-2003), the owner of Sun Records. Founded in 1952, Sam took a chance on recording these then unknown singers and musicians, Elvis, Carl, Johnny, and Jerry Lee, whose careers took off like meteors under his expert care and tutelage. While some of these musicians later left Sun Records and went on to record at other record labels, they remembered Sam Phillips as the man who went on the line for them and gave them their start. Sam Phillips later recorded Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, and many others who also went on to fame under the Sun Records label.

The cast is spot-on fabulous as they are all accomplished actors as well as musicians and singers. The musical features many of the memorable songs of the 1950s rock and roll scene including Blue Suede Shoes (which was written by Carl Perkins), Real Wild Child, Who Do You Love, Folsom Prison Blues, That’s All Right, I Walk The Line, Great Balls Of Fire, Fever, and many more, that had the audience tapping their feet, snapping their fingers, and clapping their hands. The finale brought down the house and had the audience dancing at their seats, culminating a fun evening of musical theatre in a fabulous new venue. Bravo!
