Los Otros - Caesar Samayoa, Luba Mason- A.R.T. NY Theatres, NYC

We had the pleasure of experiencing Los Otros, a new musical premiering in New York City, presented by Premieres NYC and Mary J. Davis, starring Broadway veterans Luba Mason and Caesar Samayoa, at A.R.T./New York Theatres located at 502 West 53rd Street in Manhattan on Friday, September 9, 2022. When you have a highly gifted cast, as well as a well-written and compelling story, we expected Los Otros to be sensational, and it was! The musical opened on August 25 and runs until October 8, 2022.

Luba Mason has an impressive resume of 9 Broadway shows including Girl from the North Country, which was nominated for a prestigious Lucille Lortel award, Jekyll & Hyde, and Chicago, to name but a few of her many accomplishments, as well as many Off-Broadway plays, films, television shows, and music performances as a solo artist. We first became acquainted with her talent in 2009, when she released her Krazy Love album, and then saw her perform at the Blue Note in New York. We continued to follow her career throughout the years and her Triangle album (released in October 2020), received critical acclaim. While we knew her talent as a singer, we had never seen her act before and were thrilled to have the opportunity to see her in the new musical, Los Otros at the A.R.T./New York Theatres, an intimate space perfect for telling the compelling story of Lillian and Carlos.

Caesar Samayoa, just off a 5-year run in the role of Ken in Come From Away on Broadway, is a dynamic and talented actor who has many Broadway plays including Sister Act, and The Pee Wee Herman Show, under his belt, along with Off-Broadway plays, films, television shows, and music performances on his extensive resume of successes.

Los Otros (the name translates from Spanish to English as "The Others"), written by Ellen Fitzhugh (book and lyrics), with music by Michael John LaChiusa and direction by Noah Himmelstein, follows the lives of Lillian and Carlos, played respectively by Luba Mason and Caesar Samayoa.

The setting takes place from 1933 through 2000. The musical follows the life of Carlos whose journey takes him from Mexico to crossing into Southern California, and Lillian who grew up in Southern California, from the time of their childhood to adolescence, and ultimately to becoming adults. While unbeknownst to them, their lives run parallel to one another, each living out their hopes, their dreams, and oftentimes not getting what they expected out of life. It is only later in life that their parallel lives intersect, and in that intersection, there is magic, there is the power of reflection, of a meeting of the minds and their hearts, which will resonate long after you leave the theatre.
