On Sunday, February 26, 2012, we felt as if we were magically transported to the country of Colombia by the Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia consisting of an eight piece band, singer, and 20-person dance ensemble, through their interpretation of dances that included folklore, traditional, ritualistic, cumbia, and salsa, as well as authentic music to capture the beauty, the spirit, and the culture of Colombia.

Established in 1991 by Albeiro Roldón Penagos, the "Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia is a Colombian cultural ambassador to the world, dancing for the country, the universe and above all to life ... with love. Since its inception, the ensemble has danced throughout the world, earning many awards and honors including being invited to represent Colombia in 2008 at the Beijing Olympic Games, and winning a Gold Medal for Stylized Folk Olympics in Dijon, France in 1998."

Making their first United States tour, it was an electrifying evening with the singer and band playing on stage against a backdrop of continually changing dramatic scenery of Colombia that provided the ambience for the dances.

The costumes were stunning, vibrant colors that reflected the spirit of the dances taking the audience on a tour of the country with the dance of the fishermen; the ritualistic worship of the sun with the dancers dancing among tall stone carvings; to the Caribbean and its indigenous people, on to the Atlantic region and to the excitement of Carnival, to the river basin, and to celebration of the harvest season.

When the band invited the audience to stand up, wave their arms in the air in time to the music, and join in and sing if they knew the words, the Palace Theatre was filled with positive energy and enthusiasm. For those of us whom did not know the words, we got into the rhythm, danced in place, and for a few lovely moments, we were transported to Colombia, celebrating its heritage, history, and culture. ¡Viva!
