Fanfare marks the
third release on the Splash Point Records label
for the talented singer/songwriter/trumpeter Sue Richardson. Looking within her
personal body of musical influences, Sue wrote or co-wrote as well arranged all
fifteen tracks on Fanfare where she
melds a mélange of styles and genres into a tight exciting release. To read a
review of Sue's previous release Emergence please visit the Music Scene section
(Sue
Richardson - Emergence).
The release opens with a short prelude entitled Opening Fanfare that sets the table with
Sue's brilliant horn work. The release smoothly segues into Last Attempt At Love with Sue's touching
vocals taking center stage. In addition, the track features stellar solos by
Sue on trumpet and Neal Richardson on piano rounding out this up-tempo jazz
track. The track Inbetween is an instrumental
modern jazz track where Sue's arrangement allows each member of the band to
step out and shine.
Last Goodbye is
all about Sue's sultry vocals as she sings of handling a breakup "It's too late
to change it now, life moves on and summers die, don't want to say this last
goodbye, I've loved and loved and cried ..." What Do You Do (When your dreams don't come true)? sparkles with
Sue's vocals while her horn blends segments of 40's jazz with a bit of swing on
this fanciful track. Eat Me Up turns
up the flames and Sue touches all the hot spots with her blazing horn work
while the band wails away.
The track Out For a
Duck shows the diversity of Sue's creativity with a New Orleans flavor on this short but fun
track. Worlds Apart provides us
another look at Sue's softer side and her enticing vocals and burning lyrics "Worlds
apart like years between, wake up cold so to seem, we should stop now right at
the beginning, while the odds against romance are winning ..." Sue turns to samba
for her inspiration on the track
In The
End as she saunters her way through the song. Winter Lullaby is a slow and measured track that has probably been
played and sung to her baby son, Oscar, a few times; a touching and poignant
song from her heart.
Other tracks include, SAS,
which is a juiced-up jazzy track featuring captivating work by Sue on the
trumpet and Andy Drudy on guitar; Walk On
Gravel with great scat; Infatuation
is a bouncy track that is framed by Sue's catchy vocals and her complementary
trumpet; The Aubergine, a swing track
that leads with Neal Richardson's piano that beckons Sue's trumpet, and a
medley of closing songs Fanfare, Jazz Medley, and Fanfare (reprised) round out this delightful release.
Sue continues to expand her horizons with her lyrics,
vocals, and arrangements, and on Fanfare
she has just started to scratch the surface of her enormous talents.
