Spanish Harlem Orchestra - Viva La Tradicio was co-produced
by Paul Simon and Oscar Hernández,
and released on the Concord
Music Group label as part of Concord Picante,
which was created for seminal Latin jazz musicians. This is the fourth release
for the GRAMMY® Award Winning
Spanish Harlem Orchestra, the first with Concord Music Group, and marks their
tenth anniversary.
The release opens with the lively track La Salsa Dura, a brash track featuring the rousing horn section
complementing the exciting vocals, and as co-producer Oscar Hernández says
"really captures what we're about." The second track Mi Herencia Latina carries a salsa beat as they sing about "My
American Heritage," the orchestra is tight as they move the emotional vocals
through this touching track. Son De
Corazon, written by Oscar Hernández, is co-arranged by the spry 80-year old
veteran Gil Lopez; the track includes superb harmonies on top of a steady
jazz/salsa beat.
The track Como Baila
Mi Mulata is a spirited song featuring the percussion section and the
trumpet of Raul Agraz. Si Me Quieres Te
Quiero (If I Want I Want) is a well structured arrangement that features
Mitch Frohman on flute that provides a different feel to the jazzy salsa beat. Baila Latino (Latin Dance) will have you
dancing around with the lively tempo, sassy horn section, and energetic vocals.
The track La Fiesta Empezo (The Party
Started) is a party on a CD, so let the feet start moving, the hair start swaying,
and get the hips gyrating, this song is about letting loose and having fun.
Nuestra Cancion,
arranged by Gil Lopez, has the orchestra changing tempo and looking back at
what Latin music was in the past with a stunning ballad, sexy vocals, and a dazzling
baseline.
The release also includes the tracks Linda, more of that superb horn playing, great percussion work, and
enticing vocals; Regalo De Dios, a
Gil Lopez arrangement that features the flute and refreshing harmonies to a
cha-cha-cha beat, it melds a bit of the past with a little of today's sound; Rumba Urbana, a complex arrangement that
features the percussion section and trumpets dueling it out on this modified
rhythmic song; and El Negro Tiene Tumbao
that features guest vocalist Isaac Delgado surrounded by the high profile horns,
and a driving percussion section.
