Maria Muldaur and Tuba Skinny
Maria Muldaur with Tuba
Skinny: Let's Get Happy Together was produced by Maria Muldaur and
Executive Producer Holger Petersen, recorded in New Orleans, and
released on the Stony
Plain Records label.
Throughout the years I have had
the good fortune to listen to, and review, many of Maria Muldaur's albums
including Maria Muldaur - Naughty, Bawdy, and Blue where she
captured the sound of the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's, Maria Muldaur and Her Garden of Joy celebrating the music of American roots and
jug bands, and First Came Memphis Minnie which introduced new
audiences to the incredible "Memphis Minnie" Lawlers (1897 - 1973), and
she is always a delight, someone that always delivers the music magic.

Maria Muldaur
With her latest May 2021 release, Maria
Muldaur with Tuba Skinny: Let's Get Happy Together she introduces
audiences to the big brass band sound of Tuba Skinny, a Louisiana-based band that plays
traditional New Orleans Jazz, Blues and Ragtime. The 12-track release is sheer gorgeous
old-timey New Orleans Blues featuring Maria's fabulous vocals and the musicianship
of Tuba Skinny.
The release opens with the snappy
1925 Arthur L. Sizemore (1891 - 1954) song, I Like You Best Of All,
which is a quick paced musical romp with catchy lyrics with Maria singing, "I
like pie, I like cake, anything that they bake...but of all those things I like
you best of all..." Maria and the band segue into the title track, the 1938
song, Let's Get Happy Together, written by Lil Hardin Armstrong
(1898 - 1971), that keeps the party going strong.
Another great track on the release
is the 1937 Irving Berlin song, He Ain't Got Rhythm, which was
featured in the 1937 film, On the Avenue. This number showcases the
band's talent with the long instrumental intro before sliding into the lyrics.
The 1930s is well represented with
another terrific song, I Go For That, written by Frank Loesser
and Matty Melnick and released in 1938, with Maria singing about her unconventional
dream man with lyrics that will make you chuckle. The instrumentals, especially
the washboard, are extra special on this song.
If you want a little happy music
in your life, do give Maria Muldaur with Tuba Skinny: Let's Get Happy
Together a listen or two, and be sure to wear your dancing shoes.
Until next time, keep enjoying the
music!
