Kevin & The Blues Groovers - Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed Blues
Basin Street Records has another Blues star in New Orleans with Kevin Gullage's debut album, Kevin & The Blues Groovers - Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed Blues. This is 9-tracks of pure Blues listening pleasure comprised of some old Blues, some borrowed Blues, and some new Blues written by the multi-talented Kevin Gullage. The album hit the streets on July 15, 2022, and is well worth picking up and giving it several listens.

Kevin & The Blues Groovers - Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed Blues was produced by Tony Gullage with Co-Producers Brandon Adams and Jason Parfait and Executive Producer Mark Samuels and released on the Basin Street Records label based in New Orleans.

Kevin & The Blues Groovers - Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed Blues is 9-tracks of wonderful! As the name implies, the release has some old music, some borrowed music, and some new music that Kevin Gullage wrote. The release opens with a great up-tempo 1975 song written by Jeffrey Bowen, Alphonso Boyd, and Edward Hazel entitled, Shakey Ground, where its catchy lyrics implore, "I'm standing on shaky ground ever since you put me down..." Kevin Gullage shows his prowess as a songwriter as well as a singer and pianist on the next track with his slow and sultry song, Movin' On featuring Bonnie Baker Brooks on guitar.

Robert Johnson (1911 - 1938) was a prominent American Bluesman and songwriter, and Kevin includes Robert's 1936 song, Sweet Home Chicago, in the number 3 spot on the release, which he introduces by saying his father was from New Orleans, and his mother was from Chicago, and every summer they would travel to Chicago. Ronnie Baker Brooks layers in guitar on this track as well. The release continues with another Kevin Gullage song, So Called Friends Of Mine, which is another great track on an altogether great album.

Going back to the year 1969, the release slides into a Titus Turner song entitled, Grits Ain't Groceries, followed by the 1922 song, Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do, written by Porter Grainger and Everett Robbins.

The release continues with the song, Valerie, written by Abi Harding, Boyan Chowdhury, Dave McCabe, Russ Pritchard, and Sean Payne, before sliding into another Kevin Gullage song, My Baby Gave Me The Blues featuring Norman Sylvester on guitar. Kevin closes out the release with a kick-it-up rollicking finish with The Blues Is Alright written by James "Little Milton" Milton Campbell, and indeed it is!

As his hometown is New Orleans, it is only fitting that Kevin Gullage's debut album is on Basin Street Records established by Mark Samuels in New Orleans in 1997. Since then, Mark has produced an amazing number of talented artists including Kermit Ruffins, Henry Butler, Jason Marsalis, Los Hombres Calientes, Irvin Mayfield, Dr. Michael White, Jon Cleary, Davell Crawford, Lena Prima, Rebirth Brass Band, and many more. Kevin Gullage is indeed in good company at Basin Street Records, and I look forward to hearing more from this talented singer, songwriter, and pianist in the years to come. As an added note, if his name seems familiar, he competed on the television show, American Idol.

Until next time, keep enjoying the music!
