Kermit Ruffins - Livin' a Treme Life PDF Print E-mail
Written by Edward F. Nesta

Kermit Ruffins - Livin a Treme LifeThey say that Kermit Ruffin is New Orleans music, and through his lyrics and unique sound on the release Livin' a Tremé Life, that he named after the neighborhood and lifestyle essential to the music and cultural history of New Orleans, he has brought together his awareness, understanding, and feeling of the area.

Kermit Ruffins - Livin' a Tremé Life was released on the Basin Street Records label and marks his 7th release with Basin Street Records and 11th overall. Livin' a Tremé Life was named after the neighborhood and lifestyle where Kermit resides today, and which has been the epicenter for music with greats like Louis Prima and Louis Armstrong having called this area home. (Read the review on Kermit Ruffins with the Rebirth Brass Band - Throwback in the Music Scene section.)

What better way to open the door to the feel good music of Kermit Ruffins than with the track Didn't He Ramble, with the signature Kermit Ruffins trumpet licks playing a game of hide-and-seek with the clarinet of Evan Christopher as they swagger through this track. With the door pushed wide open Kermit laces in the funky track I Ate Up The Apple Tree and keeps the party dancing and sauntering.

The track Good Morning New Orleans carries that classic New Orleans ramble and features Kermit's soulful vocals and scat that are complemented by an assortment of soft female background vocals and some compelling piano interludes. The cover of Allen Toussaint's Holy Cow is raw New Orleans rhythm and blues and Kermit has some fun paying his respects to those who have come before him and their music that has made the New Orleans sound what it is.

Kermit cuts into the track Hey NAA with some funk and a saucy trumpet and vocals, which is what I love about Kermit's music; he is a permanent smile with a hint of mischief. Crossing genres Kermit brings his mark to the pop classic I Can See Clearly Now; his arrangement shines with the backup band's contribution and the stellar backing from the Bonerama Horns.

Other tracks include the rousing arrangement of High Heel Sneakers; a Kermit Ruffins original Hello Good Evening featuring the superb piano playing of David Torkanowsky; the track Song For My Father is a melding of Latin swing and New Orleans rhythms; the track For The Love Of You, which is a bit of soft jazz, a bit of soul, a hint of New Orleans funk and Chef Kermit mixing it together creating a lively concoction; and he closes the release where it all started for him with the female-rap infused track Tremé Mardi Gras.

Kermit is a party on a CD; so, mix the cocktails and turn up the music. Energy, excitement, a feeling that life is always a party, and embrace every minute, is what Kermit's music is about, and Livin' a Tremé Life is all of this and more.
