Finest Boogie and Swing Collection and cutest lil’ boogie represent only 2 recordings, from a library of 7 CD’s released by Jump4Joy, but the two releases typify the intensity, excitement, creativity, and musicianship from this exceptional swing, boogie, and R&B group. Led by Ulf Sandström, pianist and singer, who also wrote 11 of the 18 tracks on Finest Boogie and Swing Collection, as well as 3 additional tracks on cutest lil’ boogie, this is a powerful collection of music.
I had the unique opportunity to experience Jump4Joy perform live at Stampen in Stockholm, Sweden in August 2005. You may find the group frequenting this venue on a regular basis, so if you are in Stockholm make sure you check their schedule under “Gigs” on the Jump4Joy’s website, they are must see live band.
The music on the 2 releases captures the 40’s and 50’s as well as the New Orleans sound, which is not an easy format to play, but Jump4Joy does not just flirt with this style of music, they embody it throughout the standards and the original tracks on both releases. Jump4Joy’s history is as varied as their music, and as exciting as their showmanship. Starting with Ulf Sandström, who was influenced by music and cultures from his early years, Ulf speaks 4 languages, has lived all over the world, and has that special ability to play the piano by ear, which he started to do when he was just 4 years old, so don’t ask him to read music, just let him hear it. You can hear the early years of the cultural and linguistic influences in his music and in his floorshow; he knows how to connect early and often with his audience regardless of the language, while the rest of the band takes their lead from him. Saxophonist extraordinaire Bo Gustafsson has been playing with Ulf for over 20 years, and when you experience the group live you can feel the chemistry both musically and in their showmanship. Anders Almberg on drums and Jan Adefelt on bass hold their own to the dynamic duo of Ulf and Bo, and they keep the rhythm section strong and tight.
The release Finest Boogie & Swing Collection is a collection of live performances over a 10 year period from 1994 – 2004. What I truly enjoyed about this collection is the 11 original tracks, which display the talents of Ulf as a singer/songwriter. His ability, as well as the entire band’s ability, to interpret the sound and feeling of the New Orleans style of music is pure magic. The original tracks such as “Barbeque”, “Happy”, and “Why oh Why” convey the New Orleans style with the energy and verve that you feel when you are listening to live music in New Orleans.
cutest lil’ boogie takes on a life of its own and shows the rediscovery of the 40’s and 50’s with the honky-tonk piano of Ulf, the sexy sassy sax of Bo, and the tight rhythm section holding the line throughout the release. Jump4Joy is four musicians rediscovering the sound, the energy and the bounce that made the 40’s and 50’s, as well as the New Orleans music era so special to the music that we listen to today, and they do it with a passion and love for music.
