Jay Collins' latest release, Jay Collins and The King County Band - Rivers, Blues and Other People is Jay's most powerful release to date. He is accompanied by a Who's Who of rock, blues, and country rock musicians including the legendary Levon Helm and Donald Fagen. The release is a blend of great vocals, outstanding lyrics, and driving melodies.

Jay Collins & The Kings County Band - Rivers, Blues and Other People was released on the Sundown Recording label and was produced by Jay Collins and Charlie Martinez. The release is more than just Jay Collins' best release to date, but it features a list of Special Guests adding their unique musical prowess to up the ante on Rivers, Blues and Other People. Playing drums on the song I'm Gonna Sleep With One Eye Open, before his premature death, is the legendary member of The Band, Levon Helm (May 1940 - April 2012), may his steady bass-line rest in peace.
Jay is a sought after musician having played with Gregg Allman, Levon Helm, Donald Fagen, and the Dukes of September (Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs), to list a few. Jay likes to say, "good music is just good rhythm, good melody, good harmony, and a little bit of soul, and on Rivers, Blues and Other People, you have that and more. The release opens with the track Mighty Mississippi a funky bluesy track that leads with Bruce Katz tickling the ivories on the piano and Jay's captivating blues vocals as he sings, "Mighty Mississippi, roll my troubles away, .... Mississippi woman, sure like the way that you smile."
The track The Engine continues with the blazing keyboard work of Bruce Katz and the amazing vocals of Jay Collins. A country rock and blues track, The Engine drives its melody home against great lyrics that speak of Jay's love for his wife, Amy, and her influence on his life, "Played in the Streets of New York for dollar bills and change, Before I met you, woman, I had my ups and downs"; sung from the heart, driven from the soul. Jay changes it up with the track Mary Ann's that features Larry Campbell on mandolin and an engaging rhythm section that culls you into Mary Ann's for some rest and relaxation from the wearies of the road.
Jay covers Bob Dylan's Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, and the harmonies are great as the Kings County Band lays down a great country rock beat to this Dylan classic. The track This Song I Have For You, a Jay Collins original, carries a sassy melody with an island beat as Jay, the Kings County Band, and special guest Jim Weider on acoustic guitar paint a story of understanding, of thanks, and the need to say a prayer for things that that he has and the support he has been given.
I'm Gonna Sleep With One Eye Open features the legendary Levon Helm on drums on my favorite track on the release. Levon shows off his chops as he leads the way and draws the line for Jay to sing his raspy vocals on, "You won't have a chance to treat your daddy wrong... so, I'm going to sleep with one eye open from now on."
Waiting for Snow To Come has Donald Fagen on piano complementing Jay's poignant vocals, "... nobody wins a race before they've run." This track has it all, powerful lyrics, an enticing arrangement, and the musical magic of singer, songwriter Jay Collins leading his band.
Other tracks on the release include When You Got A Good Friend, featuring Jim Weider on National Dobrio Guitar, Yesterday is Gone, and Leave A Light On For Me, featuring Bruce Katz on piano, and Larry Campbell on pedal steel guitar.
The release has captivating rhythms, strong melodies, great harmonies, and of course a lot of Jay's soulful vocals; Jay captures the essentials of rock, country rock, funk, and blues neatly tied up and waiting for your listening pleasure.
