The release opens with the African influenced track West African Strut, written by Dr. Michael White, which is percussion based and typifies the tempo of African music, but in the hands of Dr. Michael White, he introduces the up-tempo bouncy sound of the New Orleans strut through his clarinet while adding in a bit of ragtime piano. He closes the track with the Caribbean bass-line and the enchanting call of the clarinet played like a snake charmer.
The track Careless Love has that hallow New Orleans tempo signified by the repeated pounding of bass-line chords, which the vocals and the band ride throughout the song. Singular in sound, but moving in format, Dr. Michael White's rendition is powerful and engaging. The South African Medley of Pata Pata and The Lion Sleeps Tonight is lively and entertaining, while the cover of Basin Street Blues is sassy, flamboyant, with a hint of tawdry.
Taking a page from the Caribbean, Dr. Michael White Jazzes up the Bob Marley track One Love; a sound that Bob would be swaying his dreadlock around and dancing to. The often-covered track House of the Rising Sun takes on a different feel with the lead-in by a banjo, but it finds that familiar haunting sound through the clarinet. I'm Gonna Hoodoo to Get Your Love, written by Dr. White, features the vocals of Thais Clark on this shimmering, shaking, and taunting track. Another Dr. Michael White original, Black Stick Rag, picks up where I'm Gonna Hoodoo to Get Your Love leaves off, with a dazzling duet of piano and clarinet rolling out the ragtime sound.
The release includes the tracks Haitian Celebration: Rara Second Line / Haiti Cherie, written by Dr. Michael White, that mixes sounds like a blender making the New Orleans Hurricane cocktail, smooth, tasty, and powerful, Mpingo Blues, written by Dr. Michael White, which is a musical swagger through the heart of New Orleans Jazz, and with the tracks His Eye Is on the Sparrow, and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, he shows the somber and heartfelt side of New Orleans, while with the track Take Me To The Mardi Gras, he renders the fun side of the streets of New Orleans during the wild time of Mardi Gras.
Adventures in New Orleans Jazz Part 1 is a journey through New Orleans Jazz that uses all of the listener's senses to ensure that they feel the depth that the sound conveys.
