Dana Fuchs - Love to Beg was produced by Jon Diamond and Dana Fuchs and basic tracks
co-produced by Kenny Aaronson and released on the Ruf
Records label.
Although Love to Beg is her
debut album for Ruf Records, Dana
Fuchs is no stranger to the world of music. This blues/rock singer songwriter
and her band have played to sold out shows throughout the United States and
Europe, and have shared the bill with Joe Crocker, Dickey Betts, Gov't Mule,
and Bob Weir. Dana played the character "Sadie" in the Julie Traymor film, Across
The Universe, and the resultant soundtrack album earned her a platinum
album, and her uncanny vocal resemblance to Janis Joplin earned her the role in
the long running Eric Nederlander off-Broadway production, Love Janis.
The album opens with the
notable title cut, Love to Beg that sets the mood letting the listener
know that this is going to be a heavy ride set against a talented cast of
musicians and background vocalists. Dana's powerful and sultry rocker voice and
lyrics implore, "I'm never far away from loving you again, we drew our lines in
the sand, ain't no way to take back everything I said, that would put us
back where we began ... and I'm never far away from loving you again."
Nothing's What I Cry For is a song of regret with its evocative lyrics, "... now
everything means nothing and nothing's what I cry for ..." Summersong is
about the end of a summer romance backed by a talented cast of musicians, horn
section, and backing vocals by Jenny Douglas and Vivian Sessoms.
What You See is pure seduction with its lyrics, "Do you see me -
Do you hear me - Do you fear me - You wanna touch me ...If you like what you see,
close your mouth when you look at me ..."
Dana beautifully covers the
1965 Otis Redding recording of I've Been Loving You Too Long written by
Otis Redding and Jerry Butler, where the lyrics proclaim, "I've been loving you
too long to stop now ...," and clearly, Dana makes the cover her own.
Other captivating songs include
Golden Eyes, a hard driving
rock song that pulsates with guitar licks that complement Dana's enticing
vocals, Pretty Girl a raw rock and roll and blues song that
captures Dana's deep vocals, Keepsake a ballad where Dana relaxes and
lets her heart lead her voice on this poignant track, Set It On Fire, a pulsating rock and blues track that Dana sings with her heart
on her sleeve, Keep On Rollin, a
blues ballad that sings of loss and the need to move on, Faster Than We Can, and Drive.
The album closes with Superman
where the emotionally charged lyrics will leave you needing to sit down and
reflect. All told, Dana Fuchs rocks with her album Love to Beg, leaving this listener eagerly awaiting her next
release.
