At Last released on the Telarc label of Concord Music Group is the latest in a long and successful career of Ann Hampton Callaway. The release At Last is a selection of recordings to, as Ann put it, "help the world fall in love." The tracks were selected and arranged to carry her audience on a journey of feelings and emotions as she tugs at the heartstrings of relationships, while closing out the release with the apropos track entitled On My Way to You.
She opens At Last with the legendary Cole Porter track What is This Thing Called Love and you can feel cupid's arrows being drawn as she works her magic with her sensational alluring vocals that come across as a blend between blues, jazz, and pop; when you add in a bit of scat, the love potion is poured. Comes Love is a slinky, sexy track with Ann's vocals sauntering along embellishing each word and phrase, while turning up the emotional heat, and along with the accompaniment of the muted horn, the setting is complete.
The Joni Mitchell track Carey, sings of the first lull in a relationship that draws on the passion and chemistry to hold things together, but when we listen to our heart it can tell us the right direction. The title track At Last turns the table that just when we think that love had passed us by, there comes that special person into our life who ignites the flame deep within our soul. Ann's vocals brought goose bumps to me as we all know when we have finally met that special someone in our life, that person who casts a spell over our being, and as Ann sings it "As you are mine At Last."
Placed in the middle of the release are the tracks Spain and Lazy Afternoon that talk of how love can veer a bit and challenge your beliefs and feelings, but as things unfold you can recall special times and memories; the accompaniment of the piano to complement the vocals creates a tender and poignant section of the release.
Landslide written by Stevie Nicks is a timely transition in the release and in the game of love as we all recover from changes and challenges; Ann's arrangement slows the tempo down while Mads Tolling on violin covers her vocals in a very special rendering of this track.
The last 4 songs on the release include two tracks, Save A Place For Me and Finding Beauty, that Ann wrote and arranged. Both of her songs are arrangements that should be standards in their own right; they contain enchanting lyrics, engaging melodies, and Ann's rich and velvety vocals.
Her arrangement of Over the Rainbow fits like the perfect evening glove in completing the ensemble and providing that bit of glamour of being in love. She closes out the release with the track On My Way To You, and what better way to wrap her arms around each of her listeners and project the meaning of being in love - sharing yourself with another.
