Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience was produced by Jeff Eyrich on the BePop Records label. The release was 3-years in the making from a passing conversation while driving in New York to the final laying down of the tracks, but Al Somma stayed true to his original idea and his debut release Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience was born.
As Al Somma tells it, “The concept was formed by William Blake’s collection of poems called, “Songs of innocence, Songs of Excellence,” a title that seemed right for an eclectic mix of standards to tell a story from the heart.” Al Somma is a crooner holding true to the style that made the music of the 30’s and 40’s so memorable. This is not just a collection of standards, but with the assistance of Larry Ham they restored the introductions that were usually left off jazz recordings, and combined with Al’s talent, this is a compilation that shows the standards in a new light.
February is the month for romance with Valentine’s Day; along with candy and roses what could be better than romantic music that pays homage to the likes of Nate “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Thelonious Monk. If you are not familiar with the sound of the 30’s and 40’s, then let this release introduce you to this era; if you are familiar with the 30’s and 40’s I know you will enjoy this release. Either way, I recommend that you open a nice bottle of wine, turn the lights down low and sit back with your significant other while letting Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience do “its thing.”
