Devon Allman - Interview PDF Print E-mail
Written by Debra C. Argen
Devon Allman Singer/ Songwriter/ Guitarist Devon Allman takes time to chat with Luxury Experience about his new solo CD, Turquoise, released on the Ruf Records label, touring, and his new hot sauce, Born to Hula All Natural Hot Sauce that is as sizzling as the release.

Devon Allman - Turquoise Devon, thanks for taking time out from touring to speak with Luxury Experience about your new solo CD, Turquoise, released on the Ruf Records label.
Congratulations on the release, it is blazing Southern Blues Rock at its best, where you play with Yonrico Scott: drums and percussion, and Myles Weeks: upright and electric bass, and are joined by special guests, Luther Dickinson, Samantha Fish, Ron Holloway, Bobby Schneck, Jr., Pete Matthews, Reuben Williams, Adam Hill, and Rick Steff.

You wrote 10 of the 11 songs on the release, When I Left Home, Don't Set Me Free co-written with Mike Zito your Royal Southern Brotherhood bandmate, Time Machine, There's No Time co-written with Tyler Stokes, Strategy, Homesick, Into the Darkness, Key Lime Pie, Yadira's Lullaby, and Turn Off the World.

What was your inspiration for the CD and the songs that you wrote?
I had to write with constraints of a band for so many years, that I wanted to break free of that, look back, and reflect, and it was the right time to create three chord songs.
Those three-chords really rock, though.
You included one cover on the release, Tom Petty's Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, where you sing an incredible duet with Ruf Records label mate, Samantha Fish. Why did you decide to include a cover on the release?
It is always something I do, kind of like my signature, a nod to the past, to pay homage to musicians I respect, and I was always a big Petty fan. Samantha Fish is not only a Ruf Records label mate, but she is a friend as well, and I thought she would kill on that song, so I convinced her to join me on Stop Draggin' My Heart Around.
You started playing guitar very young. What age were you, and who were some of your early musical influences?
I started playing guitar at 13 years old and playing lead guitar at 31 years old. It took a long time to make the move from using the guitar as a vehicle to write songs, to playing lead guitar. It is the type of experience that I have come to love, doing double duty singing, and playing lead guitar.

Growing up I listened to 70s and 80s bands, the Stones, The Police, Steely Dan, Jimi Hendrix, and through Jimi I found the Blues. I was always a freak when it came to music, very eclectic, Sade to Slayer. Musically, I was well rounded, something musicians need to be, to able to pull from various genres, and be open minded to all genres. If I only played Blues Rock, I would not have a level of uniqueness. I want to have my own thing.
Who do you like to listen to now?
There is so much music I like, The Civil Wars, Brazilian Trance, African Jazz from Nigeria, the Stones, BB King, and I love Curtis Mayfield.
As a musician, you spend a lot of time on the road. You just finished touring Europe with your band, Royal Southern Brotherhood (Devon Allman: guitar and vocals, Cyrille Neville: percussion and vocals, Mike Zito: guitar and vocals, Charlie Wooten: bass, and Yonrico Scott: drums), and are back on the road in the United States touring to promote your new release, Turquoise.
How do you manage to keep a balance in your life?
As for a balance, I am a father of a 13-year old son, and being a father is my anchor. I cannot wait to come home after being on the road, see my son, and cook. I have been cooking for years; it is a passion, and I have my own hot sauce brand, Born to Hula All Natural Sauce.
When I am not touring, I am ready to be home, sleep in my own bed, then ready to be back out again on the road.
You have toured all over the world. Where are some of your favorite places in the world to play?
I love Spain. In 2005, I had a top hit there, and Spain is like the California of Europe. It has a great vibe, the people are incredible, and the food is wonderful. I also like France, Germany, and the UK, and am looking forward to going to Australia. I want to play on every continent.
What's next for Devon Allman?
I have several things in the works.  I am touring with my band, Royal Southern Brotherhood, as well as touring solo to promote, Turquoise. I will be touring the United States doing the Festival season, as well as touring in Australia and Europe. (Check tour dates, by visiting:

My hot sauce, Born to Hula All Natural Hot Sauce will be going into stores (also available for purchase on his website -

I am also on the Board of the National Blues Museum, which will be opening up at the end of next year (2014) in St. Louis, home of the Blues, which is very exciting, as the Blues genre has spawned my own genre.
