Frank Mastrone, Michael Fasano - Lend Me A Tenor

We went to see the farcical play, Lend Me A Tenor at the Music Theatre of Connecticut in Norwalk on opening night, Saturday, November 5, 2022, and we have not stopped laughing! Written by Ken Ludwig, and directed by Pamela Hill, the play has fast-paced, witty, and absolutely hilarious dialogue, flawlessly delivered by the talented cast of Michael Fasano, Alexandra Fortin, Jeff Gurner, Cynthia Hannah, Frank Mastrone, Jo Anne Parady, Jim Schilling, and Emily Solo. Winner of three Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards, Lend Me A Tenor is flat-out wonderful and runs until November 20, 2022. If you need a little (or a lot) of laughter in your life, do go and see Lend Me A Tenor.

The setting of the play is a hotel suite in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934, where the local Cleveland opera company is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the world-famous Italian opera superstar tenor Tito Mirelli, brilliantly portrayed by Frank Mastrone, for a one-night only special performance there. Time is getting perilously close to the rehearsal hour and Mr. Mirelli has still not shown up at the hotel, and this is where chaos and the fun and games begin.

Jim Schilling, MTC’s Co-Founder and Managing Directory and Conservatory Director, is hilarious as the anxious opera company owner Henry Saunders who has promised the Opera Board that they will have a night to remember when the legendary Mr. Tito Mirelli performs for them. Alas, where is Mr. Mirelli?

Michael Fasano brilliantly plays Mr. Saunders’ harried assistant Max, and when Julia, Chairmen of the opera board, wonderfully played by Jo Anne Parady, resplendent in a couture evening gown and elaborate tiara, keeps calling Henry wanting to know when she will meet the yet to arrive Mr. Mirelli, Henry and Max develop an elaborately wild and over-the-top scheme in case things go wrong, and wrong is exactly what happens when the missing Mr. Mirelli eventually shows up at the hotel with his beleaguered wife, Maria, played by Cynthia Hannah.

Adding to the mayhem is Jeff Gurner as The Bellhop, Alexandra Fortin as Maggie Saunders, Henry’s daughter and Max’s love interest, and Emily Solo as the ingenue opera singer Diana, who is hoping that Mr. Mirelli can help advance her career.

Lend Me A Tenor is brilliant from start to finish and when you have a large cast it is unusual that everyone will shine brightly in their appointed roles, however under Pamela Hill’s directorship, each member gave flawless performances on opening night where the laughter never ended. It was an evening of gaiety and laughter, and it felt wonderful to share that with the most appreciative audience who rewarded the cast with a standing ovation. We cannot remember the last time that we laughed as long or so hard during a play, and for that we are especially thankful. Bravo! As it was Opening Night after the play there was a reception with a cast and crew meet and greet, to continue the joy and laughter just a little bit longer.
